许阳出生于山东淄博，现居于伦敦的全职多媒介艺术家，许阳运用绘画，摄影，表演以及综合材料装置来反映她八年前独自来到伦敦，在地球的另外一边面对诱惑与现实，作为一个年轻女性艺术家寻找自己的身份的定位，兴趣，重新发掘童年的幻想和嗜好。她的作品受到小时候看的漫画，电脑游戏，时尚设计，变装表演，她也研究传统艺术，洛可可艺术时期，历史性绘画和纺织作品以及童话故事。许阳用她的作品探索什么是面具，什么是掩饰，什么是实质，什么是真的，什么是假的；以及个人的也是政治的。许阳用她的绘画作品来展现女性构造性的柔美一面， 并把探索这种柔美的性感可以作为每个人都可以有的强壮的特性。
Xu was born in Zibo, Shandong, as the only child she has always curious about what is one’s individuality. In her teenage years she discovered Japanese manga. Comic books and animations influenced dress-up and became a way for her to work against social constraints and connect with herself. After arriving in London at eighteen years of age, Xu was inspired by the way drag queen performers express femininity, this interested her in relation to her own upbringing in a patriarchal society. With her personal experiences, she is also using painting, performance, photography and print to explore how women are scrutinised and portrayed historically under the male gaze, from Alexandros of Antioch to Velazquez to Picasso. Xu challenges her own past through performing femininity as a power, like Tracey Emin and Louise Bourgeois, she is using her body to navigate the world as a woman.

The World is a Song 和 The Song is Exciting 是受历史上女性艺术家 Élisabeth Le Brun 和 Angelica Kauffman 的自画像而创作的。The World is a Song 描绘了艺术家背对着观众，边观察她自己在镜子的倒影边绘画她自己的画像， 而在 The Song is Exciting 中，艺术家的镜子在画的外面，所以艺术家像画面外面观察，看向观众。在画面远处窗户上反射的倒影增加了画面层次感。模糊的面部抹去了人像的身份，也消除了他们对待观众看法的反映。两幅作品是对从历史到现代女性被男性凝视所物化的抗议，从在历史中像物品一样的被描绘到当今文化中真人秀节目，Instagram，和电脑游戏中女性被标签化。从女性描绘她们自己的身体，女性再次把她们自己身体的掌控权放在她们自己手中。
The World is a Song and The Song is Exciting are works I made inspired by self-portraits by historical female painters Élisabeth Le Brun and Angelica Kauffman. Both paintings picture the artist painting themselves, in ‘The World is a Song 31082021’ the artist is facing away from the audience and observing herself in the mirror, whilst in The Song is Exciting the mirror is outside of the painting so the artist is facing out, her reflection on the window is at the back in the space. The blurred faced in the paintings have erased their identities as well as their interactions for being gazed upon. The works are rebellions statements against the female body objectified both throughout history and today, how women are pictured as objects under the male gaze, from historical paintings to female characters in contemporary culture such as reality shows, instagram and computer games. The artist believe the act of women making art about themselves returns the control of their body to them.
