Oftentimes — probably too often — words fail us. One obvious reason is that as individuals, we share different levels of mastery of this tool named language, just like any other tools. Translation between different languages can be a myth. Even when using the same language, that mysterious, ambiguous translation (or transformation, shall I say) from thought to words can be strenuous. More importantly, on top of all that impossibility, concerns regarding what should be conveyed and what should not are endless. What, when, and how? The list goes on and on. This is what I refer to as the inevitable failure of communication.
To pay my respect to this kind of failure (or to celebrate it), instead of facilitating the communicating process, which is fundamentally impossible according to my previous words, I intentionally make the decoding of messages (slightly) more difficult so that reading is no longer second nature to the receiver. In this work, Love Letter, I transformed an unsent letter collected from a stranger into a decoded text that requires extra effort from the audience to read. Content of the letter is accessible only with some additional time and patience. It is my gesture to tenderly deliver a message to someone who might actually care.
The process of decoding the letter while viewing this work is similar to relearning your mother tongue. Mixing an adequate amount of familiarity and foreignness, one shall regain vulnerability and empathy essential to any form of sincere communication.

Living between the US and China, Jasphy Zheng is an interdisciplinary artist whose art practice persistently explores topics including the inevitable failure of communication and the imagined collectiveness shared among individuals. With environmental installations, unannounced performance, ephemeral sculpture, and artist's books, Zheng constructs situations as public interventions to raise our awareness of social and cultural environment in and out of the context of contemporary art.

The Love Letters series is a long-term project by the artist that began in 2015 and is based on letters collected from strangers that have been left unsent for various reasons. The collected unsent letters are often presented as individual works, in the form of, but not limited to, artist's books and installations, displayed in secretive ways in exhibition spaces or on the street. Through different methods of intervention and arrangement, the artist translates the content of the letters into difficult 'codes', deliberately making reading and accessing the information more difficult, so that each audience, the 'recipient of the letter', is asked to perform the act of receiving the message in a particular position, angle and understanding, a complete attempt at communication.
