作为与荷兰驻韩大使馆共同推动的2021年韩荷建交60周年的国家“国际交流项目”的一部分，荷兰艺术家欧文·奥拉夫（Erwin Olaf）在水源市立美术馆举办“完美时刻——不完整的世界”展览。在本次展览中，将展出约 110 件欧文·奥拉夫的摄影作品。

In the wake of the 60th anniversary of Korea-Netherlands diplomatic relations in 2021, the Suwon Museum of Art presents “Perfect Moment – Incomplete World”, a solo show of Erwin Olaf, in collaboration with the Dutch Embassy in Korea. This exhibition, which is part of the “International Exchange Program,” puts on display around 110 photographs by the Dutch artist.

“完美时刻——不完整的世界”是欧文•奥拉夫在亚洲最大规模的展览，灵感来自艺术家自己独特的作品风格，通过复杂的工作室制作和户外摄影捕捉瞬息万变的时代和生活在其中的人类。本次展览分为四个部分，包括艺术家40年的作品和2019年在荷兰阿姆斯特丹国立博物馆举办的“12位大师与欧文奥拉夫展”，共110件作品展示。

“Perfect Moment - Incomplete World” is Erwin Olaf's largest exhibition in Asia to date. It showcases the artist’s unique style which work which captures the ever-changing times and the people who live in them through complex studio productions and outdoor photography. Divided into four sections, the exhibition includes 40 years of the artist's work and artworks presented in the 2019 exhibition "12x Erwin Olaf" at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

The first part named “Moments: Narrative Directing,” narrates the story of dramatic human emotions - through a contextualized performance. Among them, the fragility of human existence which is a recurring theme in Erwin Olaf’s work. Since the 2000s, Olaf has captured moments and scenes in which characters are wrapped in mesmerizing images such as in his series Rain (2004), Exasperation (2005), Hope (2005) and Grief (2007). His latest series, "April Fool" (2020), further reinforces the illusion of the "real world" by alluding to the human frailty that inevitably comes to light in complex situations.

In the second part, "Cities: Between Fantasy," works based on real cities created by Erwin Olaf in the 2010s are on display. From this period, the boundaries between reality and artistic fiction in his work became looser, breaking with the traditional nature of photography to document reality, give narrative to photographs, and expose the fantasy created by the ever-changing city. The The trilogy series Berlin (2012), Shanghai (2017) and Palm Springs (2018) metaphorically represent the status quo of each city through location shooting. In this urban series, the artist captures the changing worldview and the loneliness experienced by young people in a rapidly changing society, by photographing their facial expressions and gestures.

The third part of the show, “Classics: Beyond The Modern”, particularly captures the moments created by the rhythms and imagery of classical painting and poetry, where the artist creates a realistic and surreal world through photography. In this series, Olaf captures images that transcend reality against the backdrop of nature. The images are similar to the romantic paintings of the 19th century, in which he expresses the perfect moment by substituting the imperfect world into the relationship between human and nature. If we look closely, we can see the models in the photos wearing headphones or taking selfies instead of appreciating the vastness of nature, where towering mists and terrifying mountains stand in stark contrast to human hubris.

艺术家简介

埃文·奥拉夫于1959年出生于荷兰。1988年，他以《棋子》系列出现在国际艺术界，并因此获得了欧洲青年摄影师奖。在世界各地举办了无数博物馆展览之后，2019年奥拉夫庆祝其40年的职业生涯，在海牙的市立博物馆和摄影博物馆、上海摄影中心举办了一系列展览来回顾艺术家的主要作品。此外，荷兰国立博物馆还拥有艺术家工作室收藏的500件摄影作品、视频、作品集和书籍，作品涵盖了奥拉夫的整个职业生涯。如今，艺术家工作生活于阿姆斯特丹。

Artist Biography

Erwin Olaf was born in 1959 in the Netherlands. He emerged on the international art scene in 1988 with his series "Chessmen", which earned him the Young European Photographer Award. After numerous museum exhibitions around the world, Olaf celebrated his 40-year career in 2019 with several major retrospectives of his work: at the Gemeentemuseum and Fotomuseum in The Hague, at the Shanghai Center of Photography, and at the Rijksmuseum, which is now in possession of 500 pieces from the artist's studio collection - photographic prints, videos, portfolios, books - covering his entire career. He lives in Amsterdam.
