作为一名录像创作者,我通常会以一个局外人的身份周游世界。摄像机背后的人总是置身于镜头之外,透过取景器洞察世间万物,将看到的一切定格在画面之中。对于我来说,这种在旅行与拍摄中对生活的定格本身即是一个生活/艺术项目。那么,如果我将自己的生活框定为艺术,最终会拍摄出怎样的影像呢?

As a video maker, I travel through the world as an outsider. The person standing behind a camera is always outside, looking through the viewfinder, framing what she sees. This framing of life, traveling and filming, is for me a life/art project. If I frame my life as art, what will I film? 


在自身经历的影响下,我会为特定的作品所吸引,也会被某些作品深深触动。这些年来,在参与各类展览并结识中国录像艺术家的过程中,我逐渐意识到中国当代录像艺术起源于两种具有互补性的冲动力,即“纪实性”冲动与“表演性”冲动。在从事录像工作之前,我曾作为行为艺术家进行过多年的创作,因此我对这两种冲动力所孕育的组合尤为敏感。我接触过的几位艺术家,包括李消非、李牧、方璐、周滔,都在其创作中展现出这些倾向。而他们的作品也为我带来了灵感,鼓励我进一步探索“纪实性” 与“表演性”相结合的可能性,以及艺术与生活是如何交织在一起的。

My own experience informs the work that I'm drawn to and the work that moves me. Through the years, as I attended exhibitions and met Chinese video artists, I came to the conclusion that Chinese contemporary video art comes out of two complementary impulses: documentary and performative. Because I was a performance artist for many years before I began working in video, I'm particularly sensitive to the combinations these two impulses can create. Several artists I have met, Li Xiaofei, Li Mu, Fang Lu and Zhou Tao, illustrate these tendencies. Their work has inspired me to look more closely at how the documentary and the performative can combine and how art and life are woven together. 


我四处旅行、交友、布置展览,扮演着局外人与艺术家的双重角色。而在我自己的生活/艺术项目中,我作为一名表演者,将自己的经历框定为艺术,并就此以一种不同的方式关注我所体验过的一切。对我而言,摄像是一场旅行⸺一种使我得以行走于生活中、穿行于各色未知空间里的方法。我留心每一处细节,将日常生活中的表演记录下来,并畅想更加宏大的故事。

My personas are outsider and artist, traveling, making friends, installing shows. As a performer in my own life/art project, I frame my experience as art and by doing so, I pay attention in a different way to everything I experience. For me, filming is a journey, a way to walk through life, through unknown spaces. I notice details, document the performances of everyday life, imagine larger stories.

艾伦·茨威格(Ellen Zweig),媒体艺术家,作品以录像及录像装置为主。她常在中国工作并在中国创作了一些系列作品。2001年至2007年,她用《HEAP》系列录像作品刻画了若干与中国有来往的西方人的群像,还创作了几件有关于她试图了解中国和学习中文的装置作品。2010年至2016年,她拍摄了《风的另一个故事》,向纪录电影大师尤里斯 · 伊文思(Joris Ivens)及他在中国拍摄的封镜之作《风的故事》(Une Histoire de Vent,1988)致敬。2017年至2018年,她根据亚洲有关狐狸的故事创作了一系列录像作品,包括《森林狐狸雾》、《方位忌讳》和在一个内置在展示桌里的装置作品《由狐狸居住》。目前她正准备发布关于收集的系列新作《所有那些花园》,包括“门票”(茨威格保留了2000年到2018年间她在中国去过的所有参观地点的门票),以及影像作品《家庭琐事》, 有关她106岁的母亲、姐姐和她本人的收藏。茨威格还拍摄了以艺术家兼音乐人Z’EV为主人公的纪录长片《心脏跳动鼓膜》。


Ellen Zweig is a media artist who creates videos and video installations. She often works in China where she has created several series. From 2001-2007, she created HEAP, a series of video portraits of Westerners who had some relationship to China and several installations that dealt with her attempts to understand China and to learn Chinese. From 2010-2016, she created Another Story of the Wind, an homage to the documentary filmmaker Joris Ivens and his last film,  Une Histoire de Vent, (1988) filming as Ivens did in China. From 2017-18, she created a series about fox lore in Asia which includes the videos, Forest Foxes Fog, Directional Protection, and an installation in a display table Inhabited By Foxes. She is currently releasing a new series, All Those Gardens, which is about collecting and includes "Entrance Tickets" (Zweig has saved every entrance ticket to every place she’s gone in China from 2000-2018) and Family Matters, a video about the collections of her Mother, who is 106, her sister and herself. She also made the feature-length documentary film, Heart Beat Ear Drum, a film about the artist and musician, Z'EV.

Amplifier – Media Art Issue by OCAT Shanghai probes into one particular subject in the field of media art in each edition, intending to carve out a "forum" for practitioners and researchers within the fields of media art and related disciplines to make their voices heard, exchange viewpoints and further their thinking. In the meantime, it also intends to offer alternative perspectives and tools for the public to get to know and involved in media art.
