The Whiteness of the Whale
Paul Graham, 2015
Paul Graham's photography follows the logic of Walker Evans and Robert Frank. In Paul Graham's work, the order forms a beautiful image. Through the thread of "America", Paul connects the issues of racism, social inequality and the nature of photography.
The title 'White of the Whale' is taken from the novel 'Moby Dick' by Herman Melville. The novel tells the story of Captain Ahab, who eventually dies with the whale in pursuit of the whale. Paul uses this as an allusion to the fact that although economic development has brought more people to the cities. But the traces of everyday life continue to remind dreamers that there is a gap between dreams and reality.
