彭祖强个展“Sideways Looking”将于伦敦时间2022年4月13日傍晚六点至晚上八点在英国伦敦的Cell Project Space开幕，展览将持续至2022年6月12日。

Peng Zuqiang's solo exhibition "Sideways Looking" opens at Cell Project Space (London, UK) on April 13, 2022, from 6pm to 8pm (BST). The exhibition runs through June 12, 2022.

Cell Project Space推出艺术家彭祖强在英国的首个个展。展览囊括艺术家最新的共同委任作品，以及近期创作的共三组动态影像装置，并将于六月出版和发行彭祖强第一个图书项目《后来》（Hindsights)。这是Cell Project Space在展览项目中首次开放所有展厅，包括二楼的画廊空间和一楼的两个新空间。

Cell Project Space presents Sideways Looking, the first UK solo exhibition by Chinese artist Peng Zuqiang, including newly commissioned and recent moving image installations, and the artist’s first book project Hindsights, to be published by and launched at Cell Project Space in June 2022. For the first time throughout Cell’s exhibition programming, the show will span across all three exhibition spaces including the first floor gallery and two recently opened spaces on the site’s ground floor. 

散布于两层展览空间的5通道动态影像装置《保联》（keep in touch），在一组组片刻的沉默、不安的闲谈和隐晦的肢体交流中思考着接触和联结的复杂性。

Split across two floors, the 5 audiovisual channels of moving image installation keep in touch appears fragmented with moments of silence, uneasy gossip, and coded bodily communication to consider the complexity of contact, touch and solidarity. 

16毫米胶片黑白单通道装置《瞥漏》（Sight Leak）以一个本地游客的视角，对罗兰·巴特（Roland Barthes）1974年的中国之旅日记进行了重置。这位法国知识分子无法跳脱出被安排好的行程，沿途城市的社会和文化结构对他来说仍旧难以理解，也因此让他觉得旅途枯燥乏味。他在旅途中的情欲思索在彭祖强的作品中折射为关于阶层、目光和欲望的对话，回应着巴特对相同主题的观察。《瞥漏》通过分散的叙事声音，寻找并质疑在凝视和观察之间的短暂缝隙。

Sight Leak, a 16mm black & white single-channel installation, reconfigures Roland Barthes’ memoirs of his 1974 journey to China, from the perspective of a local tourist visiting Changsha; the artist’s hometown. As the French intellectual was unable to access the city beyond the route orchestrated for the delegation, the city’s social and cultural fabric remained to him inscrutable, thus, in his own words, dull. His judgments about China are refracted in Peng Zuqiang's work as fragments of dialogues on class, looking and desire, responding to the reflections on the same matters elicited alongside Barthes' sense of eroticism. Decentring the importance of the speaking subject, Sight Leak at once looks for and places in doubt transient moments between gazing and looking.

展览共同委托创作的全新影像装置《青园》（The Cyan Garden）试图揣摩，赋形不通顺的历史回忆——这一命题的可能性。作品部分使用过期乐凯航空卷拍摄，徘徊于一个隐蔽的电台遗址和一位艺术家友人经营的名为“情人”的民宿之中。1969年到1981年间，流亡的马来西亚共产党地下电台“马来亚革命之声”曾在离这位朋友住所不远的城镇驻留，而其遗址现在正被改造成为一个度假村。投射在半透明亚克力板上的影像，生成朦胧的残影，摇曳闪烁于电台噪音、广播档案音频、电台遗址和装修成“东南亚”风格的民宿之间。

Newly commissioned for Sideways Looking, The Cyan Garden considers the limits of giving form to the past which cannot cohere into memory. In part filmed on ‘Lucky', a discontinued b&w 16mm film reel stock intended for military aerial detection, the moving image revolves around a radio station that was not supposed to be detected and an Airbnb apartment ‘The Lover’, run by Peng’s friend in their hometown. Between 1969 and 1981, a Malaysian communist underground radio in exile Voice of the Malayan Revolution resided in what is now soon to be a resort. Projected on a holographic screen producing shadowy after-images, the work flickers between radio static, bursts of archival jingles, ruins of the radio station and choreographed scenes of the Airbnb apartment decorated in imagined ‘Southeast Asian’ style.

通过非线性叙事、联想的图像与身体间的隐晦交流组合而成的本次展览，是艺术家近期作品最全面的一次呈现。试图探索一种无论是抹去还是了然都无法渗透的视觉编排。

A choreography of non-linear narrative, silences, associative images, and coded communication between bodies, mark the artist’s most expansive project to date. Sideways Looking examines the agency of tacit, silent and partially inscrutable gestures as a visual vernacular that neither erasure nor transparency can permeate.

彭祖强 Peng Zuqiang

彭祖强（b. 1992，长沙）。2014年毕业于伦敦大学金史密斯学院，2017年毕业于芝加哥艺术学院。彭祖强的录像、电影与装置创作⽴源于研究与观察，着眼具体物件、语言与历史中潜藏的多元联系与情感痕迹，并通过构建关联与巧合来揣测含义。

近期参与过的驻留项⽬包括：中欧大学高等研究院，布达佩斯 （2022）、器空间，重庆（2020）、Skowhegan，缅因州（2019）以及The Core Program驻地计划，休斯顿（2017-2019）。他将于2022年开始在荷兰皇家视觉艺术学院的驻留。他曾于2020年获得华宇青年奖“评委会特别奖”，首部长片《难》于同年获印尼⽇惹纪录⽚电影节国际长⽚竞赛单元的“特别提及”。

Peng Zuqiang (b. 1992, Changsha). He graduated from the Goldsmiths, University of London in 2014, and from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2017. He makes video, film and installation, with an attention to the affective qualities within histories, bodies, and language, approximating meanings through associations and coincidences. 

Peng’s recent residencies include IAS CEU, Budapest, Hungary (2022); Organhaus, Chongqing, China (2021), Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, Maine, US (2019); The Core Program, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston , US (2017-2019). Peng is starting his residency at Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam in Fall 2022. He was awarded the “Jury Special Award” at the 8th Huayu Youth Award 2020, and a “Special Mentions” at the Festival Film Dokumenter in Yogyakarta, Indonesia with his first feature film, Nan (2020).
