Drawing inspiration from lacquer, its characteristics, and its tradition, Weng Jijun provides an alternative for us to re-examine our connection with the world in a way that bridges its different dimensions. "Constellation" is both the starting point of the artist's philosophical contemplation in today’s social context and his latest development on the creative level.
Weng's mastery of lacquer has enabled him to transform the traditional "patterns" and "motifs" into a search for the origin of life and a depiction of cosmic forms, breaking the stereotype of lacquer as a craft and decorative art from different aspects. The artist prefers abstract expressions that have color at their core. Unlike the abstract brushwork on canvas and paper, the subtle yet visible complexity — the aggregate of energy and overlapping traces, the intentional and the accidental — are achieved by the interpenetration of accumulated lacquer layers and repeated polishing effects.

Vincent Cazeneuve gradually developed his narratives and aesthetics in his lacquer creations from both occidental and oriental influences with his deceptively simple and yet complex language while relentlessly exploring non-traditional supports such as old rice bags, jute ropes, bamboo, wool felt, and leather. He also tries to draw on other art forms such as lithography, relief carving, collage, and traditional crafts such as cloth and bamboo weaving, lending his work rich layers and tactile feelings.
This work belongs to Vincent Cazeneuve’s latest creations, inspired by the lacquered leather armour of the Yi people in the Daliang Mountains. With lacquer as the core of his work, the artist is passionate about integrating the unique textures of everyday objects and traditional crafts into his own abstract expressions, bringing a rich visual sense and cultural attributes to his works. This new series provides another possibility for the continuation of this ancient ethnic craft, which is on the verge of being lost.
