KeYi Gallery will hold the fourth exhibition this year on July 2, 2022. It is my honor to invite artist Zheng Mengqiang to bring you a solo exhibition "Monsoon winds blow over Dongshuang Island". This solo exhibition is the first cooperation between artists and KeYi gallery. The exhibition will present more than 20 new works by Zheng Mengqiang since more than a year ago.
The monsoon weather in Zheng Mengqiang's hometown endows his works with the "hometown temperature" unique to the southeast sea area. The repetition of monsoon promotes the renewal of memory. The figures in Zheng Mengqiang's paintings are concise and highly-generalized, and the geometric landscapes of daily life are both solid and soft in his artworks. Details are removed from the image, and the mental impact left behind is stronger. The daily motif engage with the viewers more directly, forcing the viewer to "stare into the distance" with people in paintings. The results of such expression is obvious: when the visual burden is relieved, the spiritual experience is increased.
"People" has always been the heart of Zheng Mengqiang's works. Images of hometown could also been found in artworks, such as red rocks, ocean and sand beach. Zheng Mengqiang, who grew up in the harbour of southern China, uses the texture of oil painting to express the unique dense atmosphere of ink painting, trying to find a power to fill spiritual outline in the picture.
The emotional transmission of portraits transforms individual spiritual loneliness into a broader group feeling. The people in the paintings often stare into the distance. They are in the company of each other at the ‘red Bank’, but seem to be looking forward to ‘the peach blossom Island’ in the distance. What they were looking at, Zheng said, was "the light that doesn't show up in the picture," a broader sense of communal empathy and pursuit.
"I try to reproduce and preserve a real and free emotional world that is closer to my heart by means of painting. In my works, I choose the hometown I am most familiar with and the people closest to me as the carrier to express my emotions. This environment with a sense of security and belonging allows me to present my most private and deepest feelings in my works and complete the most authentic and consistent expression in my heart."
