Marlon Kroll经常在作品中把“旧的”当作“新的”来运用，将熟悉和陌生的形式重新组合、适应和交换，但呈现结果不是后现代的。虽然最终成品是具象的，但他的作品重视“发现”多于“计划”，多由探索性的、以过程和工作室为基础的实践构成，意图通过“物质”达至“隐喻”、通过“对比”形成“叙事”、通过“姿态”建立“形式”。他鼓励模糊性、多重视角和内隐的表现模式，这是他的创作概念、形式和个人立场。

他的创作在很大程度上受到了20世纪90年代的英国一个被称为YBAs（即英国青年艺术家）的艺术家集体的影响。他们是一个松散的、多样化的团体，多在创作中使用废弃材料，追求耸人听闻的冲击性，具有狂野的生活方式和反叛性的态度。这些让他们获得了一个分裂的公众形象。
