天线空间“天线的线”项目即将呈现约瑟夫·耶格尔(Joseph Yaeger)个展《分秒不差》(Just a Second)。展览将于7月16日开幕,为内部预约观展制,展期持续至8月30日。特别鸣谢王泰然先生对展览的支持。


耶格尔以16:9画幅比例绘制的24件作品异轨自电影成像的制式规格——24帧/秒。人眼的视网膜在物体的运动前,可有一秒钟左右的停留,而电影在这片刻间,运用24格画面的衔接构成实现动态影像的基本单位,将形象的变化暂留于视觉记忆。一种低限度视觉经验的临界、运动-时间绵延的幻象、对流逝存在的再想象......耶格尔有意在24格的框架内实践着与传统电影成像相悖的实验,以绘画将一秒的时间切分成24块迥异的图像切片——与展览平行的同名自虚构小说《分秒不差》中,这是艺术家于一系列跨越人生阶段的邮件通信经历后,深受启发的“反电影”(ANTICINEMA)本能(天线空间微信公众号也将在下周连载这篇小说)。这些图像切片所捕获的时刻各不相同,但它们都通过介入性的调度置于同一时间序列,以期激活一秒钟内能够发生的一切潜力。(电影/绘画)媒介或对象的差异并不尽然是最终的目的,耶格尔所选择的24幅图像共享相近的气质:电影感场景回溯性的似曾相识下,无不透着一层含混有欲望、未知危机与忧郁的滤镜。情绪的暗流涌动在24格图像的边界互为侵渗,其强度的共时性让一股汹涌的情动力聚焦至内在心理刻度的一秒之上,而图像与图像间隙的负空间中,高潮的临在分秒不差。



Antenna Space's Antenna-tenna is delighted to present Joseph Yaeger's solo exhibition Just a Second. The exhibition opens on 16 July 2022. Visiting is by private appointment, and the exhibition runs through 30th of August. Special thanks to the support of Mr. Tairan Wang.


Yaeger's twenty-four paintings, in 16:9 scale, are detoured from the standard technical specifications of cinematic imaging — 24 FPS (frames per second). The retina of the human eye might linger for a second before the movement of an object, and cinema fills in the second articulation of 24 frames to form the basic unit to shape up a moving image, holding the changing motion of a figure in optical memory. A liminal state of the visual experience, an illusionary protraction of movement-time, a re-imagination of a passing existence... Within the structure of the 24 frames, Yaeger practices experiments that contradict conventional cinematic imaging — in the namesake autofiction Just a Second parallel to the exhibition, it is an instinct of ANTICINEMA, inspired by the artist’s experience of a series of email correspondence spanning broad phases in life — using painting to slice a second of time into twenty-four various image fragments. These images capture different moments, yet all are configured in the same time sequence with the intervention that seeks to activate utmost potentialities all at once. To reveal differences in mediums (cinema/painting) or subjects might not be the only artistic purpose; the twenty-four images selected by Yaeger share a close temperament: the retrospective déjà vu of the cinematic scenes permeate through a lens filter fusing with desire, unknown crises and melancholy. The emotional undercurrents interpenetrate borders of the 24 frames, their synchronic intensities focus affections on the psychological scale of an inner time, and in the negative space between images, climax is arriving in just a second.

约瑟夫·耶格尔(b. 1986)现生活和工作于伦敦。2008年,他于美国罗德岛设计学院获得绘画学士学位。2019年,他于英国皇家艺术学院获得绘画硕士学位。


作为一个适应当代文化记忆无常变化的艺术家,约瑟夫·耶格尔的实践可以被看作是对当代力比多(libidinal)经济中的图像恋物倾向以及绘画在可见而显露的转变和环流中同时存在的原力两者进行的平行研究。耶格尔作品中的图像乍看是可以辨别的,但却同样是无法追索的,是一种不可思议的曾相识之感。

Joseph Yaeger (b. 1986) currently lives and works in London. He received his BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2008 and his MFA in Painting from the Royal College of Art in 2019.


An artist attuned to the vagaries of contemporary cultural memory, Joseph Yaeger’s practice can be thought of as a parallel investigation in the fetishisation of images in contemporary libidinal economies, and in painting’s contemporaneous agency in the transformation and circulation of the visible. The images in Yaeger’s works appear at first glance immediately recognisable and equally untraceable, an uncanny déjà vu.


Yaeger’s works has been featured in numerous key galleries, art fairs and academic institutions, such as Antenna Space, Shanghai, China (Solo, 2022); Frieze Los Angeles, US (2022); Art Basel Miami Beach, US (Solo, 2021; Group, 2020); Project Native Informant, London, UK (Solo, 2021, 2020; Group, 2020); VO Curations, London, UK (Solo, 2020); David Lewis, New York, US (2022); The Perimeter, London, UK (2022); Mamoth Contemporary, London, UK (2020); Royal College of Art, London, UK (2019); Hockney Gallery, London, UK (2018) among others.

始于2021年春季,“天线的线”,是天线空间进一步加强展览实验性同时培养年轻艺术家的作品委任项目。这个项目流动地且不定期地在非白盒子空间开展,采取由艺术家提出的更自然的作品制作周期,并且尊重艺术家跳出画廊展览常规的在地性展览理念。


Inaugurated in Spring 2021, Antenna-tenna is a commissioning strand to further facilitate Antenna Space’s experimental programming and foster artists of younger generation. Taking places in non-whitecube settings nomadically and aperiodically, the project commits to natural production cycles proposed by the artist and grants site-responsive exhibition ideas outside the gallery.
