About Upside Down
A collision of cultures, forms, languages and colors
When CHEN Xindi, a young director and opera-lover, who is obsessed with dance and a bit nuts, meets Simon Abbe, an African choreographer who lived in France for ten years and became bonded with China, as well as Simon’s wife JIANG Keyu who was majored in Modern Dance at Beijing Dance Academy, the collision of culture and passion takes place.

UPSIDE DOWN

Integrating Kunqu Opera, poetry and drama into the dance
The dance theater "Upside Down" aims to present a series of exaggerated and witty "unconventional rules" by breaking the stereotypes of the real world, shattering them down on the edge of inversion and reconstructing a "whole new world".
The audience may wonder if they are in Alice’s wonderland – all the classic dance dramas, Avant-garde dramas, foreign poetries and traditional Chinese operas known to you will be shattered into pieces through which a new system of vocabularies and a whole new world seem to have been built up.

Shattering the existing world, facing the various forms of life head-on
In an era that we couldn't define and resources in serious shortage, only anxiety seems to be of great variety, growing daily and innumerably. At last, we found out that it wasn’t anxiety that was holding us hostage, but ourselves. “Upside Down" is an opportunity to discuss and exchange thoughts on the topic of "identity and self", striding over all differences and similarities, hysterically venting and questioning about the chaotic life we are in.

WORDS FROM
CHOREOGRAPHER
We believe speaking, breathing, watching…are all forms of dances. We believe even more in the inclusiveness of theatre, just as our lives are going through these occurrences that shall one day be condensed and put in the theater. The piece is a reflection upon where we are and how we came all the way here. Going through “broken pieces” and “pain” can be inspiring as well. The body is the direct means for you to see, to record, to feel, and to speak.
