Conversation Time: 20:00-21:30, 30th Sep.2022The screening and the talk - Free to the Public
The conversation revolves around Yan Zhou's latest exhibition The Last Twist of the Knife. In recent years, the sensitive minds of today's art practitioners towards the reality of China has been the focus of Yan’s work. He develops an imaginary way of observation on certain historical events and changes of medieval China by re-quoting archaeological remains, historical documentation and literature works. In doing so, he attempts to provide a tentative response to the pressing realities of today’s China. The Last Twist of the Knife is the latest chapter of this practice. It takes the dreams of a key rebel in medieval China, An Lushan, on the night before his execution as its narrative thread. The conversation will address some of the ever-present, murmuring questions in our present-day entanglement with China’s own history. They lie deep within the solitary act of individual corporeality and emerge at critical moments in artistic practice. How can we mobilize our desire to act rather than trapped in the pressing realities of China, and confront these questions in artistic manoeuvres?
