当地村民与莫高窟第328窟彩塑供养菩萨像


1924年1月,福格第一次中国探险队的华尔纳(Langdon Warner)单枪匹马来到敦煌莫高窟,他用胶水粘取了12块壁画,同时搬走了一尊唐代的精美塑像。加上探险队在甘肃泾川所获几件石刻以及在西安获取的碑刻拓本,福格艺术博物馆馆长福布斯认为首次探险队旗开得胜。



哈佛大学收藏的敦煌文物包括哈佛艺术博物馆(Harvard Art Museums)藏兰登·华尔纳(Langdon Warner)1923年至1925年从敦煌所获壁画、彩塑、绢画、写经等以及哈佛艺术图书馆(Harvard Fine Arts Library)藏华尔纳拍摄的大量敦煌石窟照片底片两大部分。

华尔纳1923~1924年第一次率领福格博物馆探险队前往中国西北部的主要考察目的是查看黑水城遗址是否还有挖掘价值,调查敦煌千佛洞壁画。黑水城遗址的文物已经所剩无几,华尔纳几无所获,只得前往敦煌。途中,探险队一行还发现了泾川王母宫石窟,并凿下一批石窟雕塑。

1924年1月,华尔纳首次抵达敦煌千佛洞。他开始用掺加了化学药剂的强力胶水剥离洞窟壁画,这是出发前他在哈佛大学专门请教的技术。华尔纳剥离了320窟、321窟、323窟、329窟、335窟壁画,目前完整保存在哈佛艺术博物馆的为11块。这些被剥离的壁画均十分精美,其中,323窟初唐石窟主室南壁中央的佛教史迹画“东晋扬都金像出渚”,320窟盛唐石窟南壁中央释迦说法图两侧菩萨、弟子、神王像等都很有代表性。除了壁画以外,华尔纳还带走了328窟初唐彩塑供养菩萨像。
