Su Xiaobai|Secluded Steps - 1|2019|Oil, lacquer, linen, and clay|48 x 45 x 5 cm
Tina Keng Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in the 2022 edition of ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair with a curated project Iteration, comprising the works of Su Xiaobai and Peng Wei. As Su layers paint on the substrate and textures the lacquered surface, and Peng renders exquisite details in ink on paper, encountering and renarrating the past in a renewed palette that infuses the composition, the two artists delve into a profound dialogue between the past and present, where time is a palimpsest, experience layered upon experience, like a living impastoed surface.
Peng Wei’s painting series “Once Again” (2022) is a time tunnel for the artist. She rejuvenates the old scraps of paper on which she sketched or experimented color, by repainting upon them past pieces of work in hues filtered through a prism of crisp new future. Abiding in each new work is not only the mood in which she creates them, but the tranquility that cocoons her as she paints on the scraps of varying sizes.
Steeped in emotion and thought, Su Xiaobai’s lacquer works Sericeous 6 - Flaxen (2021) and Mottled in Blue (2019) evoke patterns of blue-and-white porcelain in the force of brushstroke against an amber- or blue-tinged background. The texture of lacquer rendered through constant physical movement and manual labor embodies the strenuous process of art making.

The works of Su Xiaobai and Peng Wei conjure a dimension that manifests the interconnection between the past, present, and future through the laborious act of repetition and the blanket of color, time ultimately warped and reconfigured.
