An exhibition of more than 25 new works by British artist Rachel Jones will open at the Long Museum, Shanghai on March 18th, 2023. Titled a shorn root, this major presentation is Jones’s first solo exhibition in China. Working primarily upon unstretched canvases in her chosen mediums of oil stick and pastel, Jones builds striking, kaleidoscopic worlds that juxtapose abstracted motifs, colours and textures in a manner that is, at once, dynamic and confrontational.
This new group of paintings, made specifically for the Long Museum’s new West Wing Gallery space, marks a significant development in Jones’s ongoing interest in mouths and teeth as sites of contact between distinct realms – the mouth functioning as a liminal space that is both interior and exterior to the body. Focusing on the isolated structure of a lone tooth, each work emphasises the metaphorical potential of the craggy form to become a material focus for the artist’s investigation into the cultural, historical and psychological complexities of identity.
