The Endless Glimmers of Hope 无尽珠, XIAO Xu 肖旭, 2018. Ink on paper 纸本水墨, 84 × 60 cm
Don Gallery is pleased to announce that on March 11, 2023, it will present the exhibition "The Gods of Small Things" curated by SUN Wenjie. "The Gods of Small Things" will include the latest work of six artists: MA Lili, QIN Xiaoshi, TIAN Qi, XIANG Kaiyang, XIAO Xu and ZHAO Qian. Media featured in this exhibition include painting, installation, video, and embroidery.
The works on show are rooted in the everyday aesthetic experience. The artists transcend the screen to mirror natural interactions, intersperse strange fantasy creatures throughout the exhibition space, highlight the extraordinary by taking the audience’s perception back and forth between scenes of reality and distortion, pursue life’s truths through the written word, reproduce traditional gods through embroidery, or use installation to bring viewers back to the legendary tales of the Pirates of the South China Coast.
Matrix No.6 基体 No.6, MA Lili 马漓澧, 2023. Mixed media on canvas
The artists’ works echo each other, bringing reality into coexistence with myth, folklore, fantasy, and fictitious creatures. Through creation, figures from myth and folklore are given new life, but this is also because some gods already live on in digital life. For example, Investiture of the Gods (Fengsheng Bang) is hailed as the largest upload of digital life in Chinese history. Some of the situations presented in the artists’ work are no less an activation of a cross-section of traditional culture. Though the world we live in is still based on instrumental reality, the ambiguous relationship arising from the coexistence of fiction and reality raises doubts about the solidity of the laws that govern human society.
Who 谁, XIANG Kaiyang 项恺阳, 2022.
"The Gods of Small Things" presents a macro view of the artist's imagination; like dewdrops, these works also condense and refract our lives. Plants, currents, surging crowds, the shape of the wind…everything that we call “the everyday” is drawn into a vortex of chaos to re-emerge after a period of stasis. After living through the pandemic in this city together, are we still able to find constancy, reassurance, and trust in our personal lives and in the minutiae of the everyday? True, nothing here is on a grand scale. The exhibition space is filled with trivial, seemingly pointless and small things. Or rather, only the small things remain for us to speak of, and everything that cannot be said is found in silence.
#0, ZHAO Qian 赵谦, 2022. Inkjet print on Acrylic

MA Lili (b. 1988) was born in Chongqing, China. In 2008, MA graduated from the High School Attached to the Central Academy of Fine Arts and was recommended to the Central Academy of Fine Arts. There, she graduated from the Oil Painting Department in 2012, and went on to obtain a master’s degree from the University of the Arts, London in 2015. MA currently resides in Beijing and teaches at the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts. Her work is influenced by humanistic geography and Eastern philosophy, and explores the interactive relationship between human perception and nature, as well as the topic of space and time found between eternity and an instant. The main elements of the artist’s work, which exude a sacred and meditative ambiance, are extracted from life’s surroundings and natural objects collected from social media. Using these, MA attempts to excavate commonalities and connections between human culture and the subconsciousness in a post-pandemic era filled with contradiction, struggle, and fear on an international scale.

Beginning in 2014, she invited award-winning high school debaters to debate on topics such as "Will there be Contemporary Art in 2020?" (2014) and "Can an A.I. Be an Artist?" TIAN Qi (b. 1987) graduated from the Printmaking Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and currently lives and works in Beijing. Prior to 2020, TIAN’s art practice mainly revolved around attempting to break through the personal feeling of mediocrity brought on by his identity as a young person from a small town. TIAN says he indulged in a “Foucauldian” style of extreme obsession with experience. Such experiences included working as an art director in film shoots and participating in performance art workshops. As an artist, TIAN is influenced by the lives of singular individuals along with science fiction and boys love comics. He combines these influences with the contradictions of daily life into his paintings and writing. In 2020, he began to promote general aesthetic education as a university professor, and brought his methods into practice through a wide range of social activities.

In 2015, he graduated from the Goldsmiths’ College, University of London, and in 2020, he obtained a master’s degree from the Oil Painting Department’s Fifth Studio at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. XIANG’s work merges “text” and “painting.” As a student, he focused on writing Chinese poetry, and later went on to create work centered around writing and language during his graduate studies. XIANG takes Chinese words, sentence groups, poems, and text as the subject of his work, and directly or indirectly presents these through painting. His research revolves around how to effectively and accurately transform the roles played by Chinese characters into the visual format of images.

XIAO Xu (b. 1983) was born in Chongqing, and obtained a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the Chinese Painting Department of Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 2007 and 2010 respectively. He now lives and works in Beijing. XIAO’s work explores and deconstructs the tradition of Chinese ink painting. He dives into the dimensions of history and culture to create a space of poetic mystery which blurs history and the present, reality and fiction. The artist takes inspiration from literature, art history, film, and theater, and uses magical realism and the spatial aesthetics of theater to draw viewers into a dark world of colors, layer by layer. The artist’s enigmatic dimension of dark and quiet seems rife with hidden, dangerous tensions. Here, the viewer experiences the complex encounters, experiences, and speculations of an individual living in our current society.
