Journey Exhibiting Artists Introduction
Our latest exhibition Journey is on view until March 26. The exhibition, titled Journey, invited six post-80s artists, including Xu Zhen, Yan Zhancheng, Yang Xun, Zhang Ben, Zheng Mengqiang, and Zhou Dong, to showcase their recent artworks. They have years of practice in painting and thus have slowly established their style. Journey, as a medium for experiencing the world, provides opportunities for creative expression. Painting, as a direct way of communication, eliminates the existence of time barriers. Using painting as the medium to preserve ideas, artists explore the spiritual and philosophical aspects of art, embarking on a journey of never-ending exploration.
This article will introduce two of the artists, Yang Xun and Xu Zhen. People’s eyes are constantly drawn to the variety of scenes in the journey. We tend to stop and walk between the countryside, villages, valleys, and cities… And as we walk along the way, the scenery changes with pace.

Oil on canvas, 100 x 73cm
From creating works based on the theme of Suzhou gardens to depicting natural bamboo scenes with bright and shining light, Yang Xun has been following the light of his heart for nearly two decades, trying to preserve the traces of tradition in a contemporary setting. From depicting the lush bamboo to focusing on their details, Yang Xun observes the rigidity and softness of the bamboo sheaths, nodes, and leaves. With the shimmering colors, the hue varies with the light, becoming dreamy, moist, and vibrant.
During an interview, Yang Xun once said: "I hope that my painting is not the object itself but transmits a sort of energy. Although the image is carried by the object, it may be an energy in the universe, very powerful. And when people look at my work, they can get the interchange of energy and different kind of experiences."1
Oil on canvas, 100 x 73cm
Yang Xun paints bamboo to fuse the spirit of traditional Eastern aesthetics with forms of Contemporary Art, while Xu Zhen uses the image of a pine tree to illustrate the possibility of integrating the innovative concepts of Western modernist painting with the spirit of Chinese literati painting that use the object to express emotions and spirits. Xu Zhen focuses on painting itself, trying to find the relationship and order of visual and pictorial nature hidden behind everyday objects or landscapes. In the creative process, he usually observes the same object from different perspectives and depicts the details repeatedly, trying to find the hidden truth behind it.
Because of that, the pine leaves he depicted tend to be flat, compressed into irregular geometric shapes. However, upon closer inspection, the leaves that face different directions seem to have the potential to be integrated into the main structure of the tree. Xu Zhen seizes the subtle changes to reveal new possibilities. And the little bit changes, in Xu Zhen's mind, "are open places for painting to move towards to the uncertainty, which can break the repetition and stereotype. It is something difficult but worth thinking about."2

Yang Xun

Yang Xun (b.1981) was born in Chongqing, graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2005. He currently works and lives in Beijing. Yang Xun’s paintings are inextricably connected with Chinese tradition, yet without losing rationality and restraint. Traditional Chinese landscaping, Chinese opera figures, rockeries, flowers and bamboos in traditional Chinese style are the major elements in his works. His painting appears to be an attempt to revive some certain traditions, especially from an aesthetical perspective. His work, with a touch of peculiarity foreign to his age and time, is considered the representative of New Oriental Aesthetics in the younger generation.
