Vanguard画廊群展“层起的表面”正展出童义欣、利奥·阿诺德、余晓及汪晓芙等四位艺术家一系列不囿于二维平面的绘画性创作。Vanguard 画廊近期将分别介绍以上艺术家的艺术实践与创作，本期重点介绍艺术家余晓的相关作品。展览将持续至5月14日，欢迎大家前来观展。

The exhibition “Layered Surface” at Vanguard Gallery presents a selection of works by Yi Xin TONG, Leo ARNOLD, YU Xiao, and WANG Xiaofu, bringing together pieces which take the two-dimensional surface as a starting point to explore new alternatives for artistic practices. Vanguard Gallery will display a series of posts regarding each artist mentioned above, with this one focusing on Yu Xiao. Through these posts, the readers could gain a comprehensive understanding of the artists' practice and creations. The exhibition will be on view through May 14, welcome to see and explore!

余晓的绘画创作基于“腹地”（Underbelly）这一元概念，源于社会经济学，采用生物学方法将绘画看成对象，通过‘腹地’的角度，对作品隐性的生物性和显性的绘画性，进行探索、分析、解构。在她创作中，“腹地”指代画作背面、画框、材料和空间等被隐藏的、未见的、被忽视的，但必不可缺的软肋。余晓揭示和安排它们到醒⽬的位置，突出其潜在审美价值，并以此质疑绘画传统的定义，呈现具有表展示性的绘画。

YU Xiao's practice engages with a meta-concept of the 'Underbelly,' derived from socio-economics. She employs a biological approach to regard painting as an object and uses Underbelly to analyse and deconstruct the implicit biological and explicit pictorial nature. The 'Underbelly' in her painting refers to the hidden, unseen, neglected, but essential soft spots on the back or margins of paintings, such as frames, leftover materials, and spaces. By exposing and settling them in a prominent position, Xiao emphasises their potential aesthetic value and challenges the conventional definition of painting, forging a body of presentational painting.

Her work reveals the inner structure of a painting, the materials, techniques, and labour involved in its creation, and highlights the physicality of the painted surface. Yu Xiao reflects on self-observation through the materiality of her works. As a female artist with Eastern cultural genes, she examines the collision of Eastern and Western cultures caused by immigration and identity influences in the contemporary context. She scrutinises the constantly changing cultural deconstruction, information folding, cognitive contradictions, and gender conflicts.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

余晓，当代艺术家，艺术教育者。出⽣于中国杭州，毕业于伦敦中央圣马丁，⽬前⼯作⽣活于伦敦，为英国皇家艺术学院艺术实践在读博⼠。她⼀直从事绘画、装置、⾏为等创作，举办过四次个展；应邀参加在中国、英国、意⼤利、波兰、美国等诸多重要群展，如英国皇家美术学院年展，迈阿密巴塞尔'Meta-forms'(元形式)公共项⽬展，何⾹凝美术馆‘别处/此在’等；作品在艺术巴塞尔Art Basel，以及国内的西岸WestBund、ART 021等国际艺术博览会展出，并被机构和私⼈收藏。

Yu Xiao is a contemporary artist and art educator. Born in Hangzhou, China, she received her MA in Fine Art from Central St Martin, currently lives and works in London, and is undertaking practice-led research at the Royal College of Art. She has been working on painting, installation and performance and has held four solo exhibitions so far; She has also been invited to participate in many important group exhibitions in China, UK, Italy, Poland and USA, such as the RA Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, the 'Meta-forms' public project exhibition at Art Basel Miami, 'Here/Elsewhere', at Hexiangning Art Museum, etc.; Her works have been exhibited at international fairs such as Art Basel, WestBund and ART021 and have been collected by institutions and private individuals.

Her recent solo exhibitions include: "Unseen Paintings", Art Now Gallery, Beijing, China (2018); "The Possibilities of Painting", Art Now Gallery, Beijing, China (2016); "Painting of small difference", Art Now Gallery, Beijing, China (2013); "Aspects", WSA Gallery, Warsaw School of Art Warsaw, Poland (2011).
