Yves Scherer was born in Switzerland in 1987 and now lives in New York. Graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in London, majoring in sculpture, his works have been widely exhibited in art institutions around the world. Scherer has won the 2015 Swiss Art Award, as well as the German Cultural Agency Board of Directors and the IAAB Beijing Travel Foundation Art Award.

Scherer's works always explore the edges between the real and the virtual worlds. For him, life itself is a fantasy game: the way people behave in public, the images and persona they inted to have, and the reciprocal influences between celebrities and the general public... He tries to express those romantic and interactive relationships in a more immersive way. His creations often come from social news and real events. Gender identities, life experiences, Hollywood culture, and public media are all topics that he is passionate about, as they are gradually blurring the boundaries between the virtual and the real words. Therefore, in his works, he often locates and reproduces the illusions in life through visual traps: splicing and fusing materials and textures, combining two-dimensional and three-dimensional spaces, mixing nature and numbers, to present his understandings and questionings on life and virtual culture.Yves Scherer manages to avoid the trivialization that involves a broad implications on popular genre, instead, he puts it at the center of reflection and investigation, explores the tension of social relationship between the virtual and the real worlds.

Scherer employs a diverse media for creation including painting, photography, sculpture and installation. He started creating mostly two-dimensional works such as traditional photography and digital imaging collage, while gradually shifting to use more simple and unprocessed materials. His use of wood, grass, cloth, artificial fur and other experimental materials make him a star of the contemporary arte povera. The way of expressing virtual culture with traditional sculpture is also an important symbol of Scherer's.

Scherer has been selected as one of three artists to be featured in ‘Artists in Flux - A Special Project Powered by Gucci’. He travels to St.Moritz with his GUCCI luggage, joined the round table conversation for a discussion on works and the process of creation. The resulting materials will be published on GUCCI's site. Meanwhile Scherer's sculpture ‘Boy’(2019) is invited to be a part of a separate exhibition in association with NOMAD 2023 at St. Moritz. Scherer’s works examplify his singular mode of juxtaposing the ideas about personal life and emotion and those of celebrity and mass culture. Drawing inspiration from diverse backgrounds and distinctive influences, Scherer explores the emotional and aesthetic resonances and connections between human and nature, presenting a fleeting moment that freezes the joyfulness of childhood. Another sculpture ‘What if Yves Made Apple Juice’(2021), from the same series as 'Boy'(2019), is presented at Art Basel 2023.

A Faithful Man, 2021

201.5 x 152 x 6.5 cm

Inkjet print, lenticular lens, acrylic glass and

KT-board in wooden frame with glass frame

In both sculpturals and lenticular works, different realities are blurred to be presented as one. Complexity orbits simplicity, encapsulated by avid desire. Perception, both biological and cultural, is questioned and dismantled as viewers reevaluate notions of depiction itself. The work is grand in both scale and means, but intimate and almost whimsical when it comes to the feeling it evokes. Polychrome aluminum, 3D-lenticulars, stainless steel, and digital printing coexist as hosts to a gamut of subjects. They touch upon love and the spiritual, from sex to fantasy and from personal history to celebrity. The big themes are grounded and made more human, while those considered trivial reach towards the eternal.

Scherer’s use of Provence is simply a gesture, a placeholder of memory and attachment, and a shared source of where together we create memories, for ourselves, our families, and our futures. Provence is a space that’s as real and historic as it is performative. It’s in this superfiction that Scherer shaped this most recent body of work.

In the midst of the pandemic, Scherer forged a new approach to his painting. Where he had made numerous large airbrush works in the past, this new body of work draws inspiration from historic Swiss landscape painters like Adolf Dietrich or Hans Emmenegger, whose works dot the artist's early life in the Swiss canton of Solothurn. Large horizontal swaths of muddled green, orange, and yellow, are sparsely separated by lone sets of poppies and peonies, each work representative of the elusiveness of recollection. Like all the work exhibited in Provence, at stake for Scherer is a multivalent intersection between nativity or ‘being at home’, the ever-malleable ideals of beauty, and the construction of oneself.

Rainy Day in New York, 2023

150 x 35 x 42 cm

Patinated bronze

Rainy Day in New York (2023), a patinated bronze sculpture of a life-sized girl and a tiny wing-adorned boy. Perched up on the girl's head like an ornament, the butterfly boy has his gaze fixed on the horizon. The girl, with her head bowed ever so slightly, seemingly looking down, is in mid-motion, as if frozen in movement, stepping forward. Draped in a long garment that emphasizes her action, she is daydreaming or set on a particularly captivating point of interest. Her predicament leaves her unmoved by the presence of the boy, her quiet confidant, and unaffected by our gaze. Before us is a moment of saunter, of childlike thirst for exploration - like a gender-bent Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, the girl and the boy are at the center of a fleeting moment, moving in unison.

New York Minute, 2023

60 x 92 x 41 cm

Patinated bronze

Scherer revisits the symbiotic relationship between two characters in the sculpture New York Minute (2023). In a reflection on duality, these characters are simultaneously placed in contrast and portrayed in a particular sort of unison. Away from the realism that is found in his sculptures, Scherer shapes the dog and the bird in abstract forms, rendering them one entity. The permanence of bronze further seals their relationship, creating a sense of solidity and perpetuity that contrasts the fleeting nature of time. These are new mode of relationships that Scherer seems to explore: the personal and the public relationships among his characters, as well as the relationships between those characters and their surroundings.

Goodnight Moon, 2023

51.4 x 63.8 x 5.5 cm

Oil on canvas

Featuring an image of the moon seen through a window, Scherer highlights a sense of consistency in composition  with a structure of nine window panels. The works balance a pursue in forms that is reminiscent of those abstract painters such as Stanley Whitney or Sean Scully who depicted moon or windowside view. These are recurring images for centuries -- from  Pierre Bonnard to Anne Craven.

Goodnight Moon, 2023

51.4 x 63.8 x 5.5 cm

Oil on canvas

In his paintings, Yves Scherer explores the intimacy of a moment caught in time. He elaborates on these beats through visual multiplicity, rich colors, and vigorous brushstrokes, reflecting on childhood, new beginnings, and the vibrancy of blossoming life. Painting the scenes in various shades of a single color - orange in most cases, peppered with blue, green, and yellow outliers, Scherer highlights the reflective properties of his expression, a focus on the deep exploration of a singular moment, a calming exercise. What Scherer invites us to experience here is not a seriality that explores the combination of colors around a specific subject, as we can find in Albers' exploration of the square, but a particular color scheme that the artist varies only very slightly within hues, tones, and shades in each work.

Archival print, acrylic glass, lenticular lens

Lenticular works allow Scherer to explore divergent realities - those of fame and celebrity juxtaposed with intimate, private moments that signal emotional, even romantic connections. A unique feature that comes into play with these works is that our movement around them triggers a new perspective in incremental ways - the subtle shifts and changes of light create a sense of direction and depth. Thus, these pieces are compelling in their ability to capture the fleeting, ephemeral quality of human experience, reminding us of how our lives are shaped by our very surroundings, as well as subtle shifts in interactions and moments that we often take for granted.

Foam, fibreglass, resin, lacquer

Little Mermaid inspired by actress and female activist, Emma Watson. Watson, a recurring subject of his work, is an advocate for gender equality and is portrayed here as both an androgynous commanding figure and a male fantasy at the same time.

"Indulging in heavy materialism, while interacting with the virtual, his work can be seen as an extension of Post-Internet sensibilities, with a renewed sense of maturity. The work is as much 'of the Internet' as it is 'of the real world'."

Le Cerisier, 2021

173 x 73 x 85.5 cm

Painted aluminium

There is a bigger-than-normal-sized boy dressed in an outfit combining old-fashioned suspenders with modern jogging pants. He bent over, engrossed in picking flowers, a pensive smile on his face. The boy is designed by computer programs, cast in aluminum, just like the characters in Hodler’s paintings. The body, clothes and flowers were all exquisitely painted. Most people might assume a reference to traditional enamel or porcelain figures. However, unlike those round decorative crafts with shiny surfaces, everything here is matte and sharp-edged, which seems as if it is carved out of metal.

From the immediacy of basic iPhone drag and drop apps to state of the art computer software and manufacturing processes, his art is enabled by the technology of today, yet touches upon the universal."

Little Kitty, 2021

45 x 45.5 x 19 cm

Painted bronze

Scherer's sculpture of a cat being petted by a human hand confronts the viewer with the contemporary internet fetishization of cats that, in recent years, has invaded social media - from Instagram and TikTok, to Facebook and WhatsApp. What emotions might these memes instigate in humans? Cats are cute, and we all bend to the power of cuteness. Yves Scherer uses cuteness to create candid images that indirectly address the ineliminable uncertainty of life, which finds immediate comfort in images of inevitable safety, like the loyal relationship between a domesticated pet and its owner. The love between a pet owner and their pet connects to the consumer culture. The gratification that comes from giving but also receiving love back as a form of expected response is embedded in the connection between buying a good to fulfill a specific need.

ALL I NEED, 2021

178.5 x138.5 cm

Oil on canvas in artists frame

Scherer addresses that same need to fill in the void with another work, this time an almost monochromatic orange painting, All I Need (2022), a combination of nuances of orange color appearing almost as a mark on a wet towel. The title seems to address a desire for a comfortable disappearance within a field of color in something that seems to be that which is not.

Flowers in December,2020

150 x 185 cm

Inkjetprint, Acrylglass, Dibond, Lentikularfolie

The lenticular print "Flowers in December" (2020) consists of three cover photos of the "British Vogue" from December 2019, for which Emma Watson was the model. The British actress became a worldwide star as "Hermione Granger" in the film versions of "Harry Potter" at the age of 11. Watson is now considered one of the highest-paid actresses in the industry, a UN special ambassador for women's rights and equality, as well as an advocate for sustainable and fairly produced fashion. She is one of the few stars to pursue her career without scandal or downfall.

Her career from child star to admired actress coupled with her political and social commitment makes Emma Watson a pop cultural icon. In Scherer's lenticular print "Flowers in December", he draws on the pictorial tradition of the icon, but turns this type of image into a paradox. By reproducing the staged cover photos of "Vogue", the print functions like a traditional cult image of the Orthodox Church. At the same time, by superimposing three portraits into a kind of dream or mirage image,  Scherer responds to the transformation of the "true image" by social media. The lenticular print, in which only one or several images are visible at the same time, depending on the viewer's point of view, is thus both an icon and an idol.

Vincent,2018

186 x 90 x 70 cm

Aluminium bemalt

The sculpture "Vincent" (2018) shows the French actor Vincent Cassel (*1966). He is famous for his role as "Paul Gaugin" (2017) in Edouard Deluc's film of the same name and for the Oscar-winning ballet drama "Black Swan" (2010), in which he played a ballet teacher with Natalie Portman and Winona Ryder. As an ideal figure, Cassel mixes French charm with the tough from the Parisian banlieu. However, since he married to actress Monica Bellucci, with whom he has lived from 1999 to 2013, the public has also taken an interest in his private life. Scherer used a photo from the website "Just Jared", which posts celebrities' news and gossip, as the image source for the sculpture. Walking on the beach, wearing sunglasses, swimming trunks, with a pair of shoes and a towel in his hands... It seems that Cassel didn't know his private moment was taken by the paparazzo.

By transforming Vincent Cassel into a sculpture through "rendering" based on the picture, Scherer brings the depicted person into reality. The realistic representation of body size and proportions is impressive, which is, however, broken again by the arbitrary colour. Pink colour seems to refer to the glittering world of the stars and the artificiality of Instagram reality - an ideal world in which people have fun in life, but often portray it as more colourful and sugary than it really is.

Native Beauty, 2020

195 × 220 cm

油画 Oil on canvas

"Native Beauty" (2020) captures a private moment as well. It is a vintage photograph of the French model Laetitia Casta during her holidays on Koriskataken, taken by a paparazzo in 1997. Yves Scherer treated it as a kind of ready-made. In the tradition of Appropriation Art, artists use found objects to query fundamental categories of the art world, Scherer appropriated this photograph in the context of his preoccupation with the phenomenon of celebrity culture.

For "Boy with tree" (2020), he used a video showing him at the age of four. In the film, he stands naked in front of his family and tries to grab a balloon hanging from the ceiling. The boy stretching to an object that is out of his reach can be read as a poetic image for the theme of growing up.

‘Leaves of Grass’ is a publication by Yves Scherer made in connection to the exhibition with the same title at Galleri Golsa. The title is a reference to Walt Whitman’s well-known book of poetry, in which he developed a language to speak about the national identity of the newly founded United States of America. The book opens with a collection of paparazzi photographs that shows Laetitia Casta on a short holiday in Corsica, the island where she was born. In connection to the photographs are large scale oil paintings of identical format that were painted during quarantine in 2020 in his studio in the Bronx, NYC. They are executed with traditional oil paint that gets sprayed onto thickly primed cotton canvas.

‘Soft Pop’ is a monographic publication that features a selection of works from 2013 to 2020, organized and selected by Scherer with designer and publisher Marius Steiger. Like a harmony based on simultaneously sounded notes, ‘Soft Pop’ does not try to reflect on it’s title or find certain references in Scherer’s works, but to produce image progressions which are ‘Soft Pop’ themselves.
