Shun Art Gallery is honored to announce its participation in PHOTOFAIRS New York 2023. PHOTOFAIRS New York is a new contemporary art fair dedicated to photo-based works, digital art and new media. This September, the fair built a new platform where photography and new technologies intersect with a strong curatorial approach at the Javits Center on Manhattan's West Side. The gallery carefully planned the artist Maleonn's solo exhibition for the fair. The exhibition will bring the artist’s three series "The Garden of Earthly Delights", "Ksana" and "Faramita Flowers" since 2020.

When reading the preface of Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities" again. This sentence deeply moved me: We had everything before us, we had nothing before us. It seems to be the contemporary dilemma we are facing. Humans are more lonely and spiritually deficient in an era of incredible material abundance. The Garden of Earthly Delights (part) / 人间乐园(片段)

Consumerism has become a kind of salvation. I reconstructed "The Garden of Earthly Delights" by installation and photography. All materials composed in this work are purchased from shopping online. Even the characters' pictures are taken from online shopping pictures, such as lingerie models on the shopping site Taobao. It is a metaphor that today‘s consumerism era is becoming our last paradise on earth.
—— Maleonn
Ksana-Love's Lost and Found (part) /

This work includes four chapters: Deities in Trouble, Love's Lost and Found, All as One, and Letter of Youth, discussing four themes: faith, innocence, death, and love. These photographs were produced by one-off shoots with slow shutters and required almost no post-editing. Each photo involves a long exposure of about 30 minutes, the time required to burn a stick of incense. The studio remained in almost total darkness, with only the tiny light of the incense stick burning, forming a meteoric track of light and making the unknown visible.
The burning sticks symbolise sacrifice and also serve as a marker. See the time, the extinction, and the return of everything. I am trying to balance its physical beauty and its marked spiritual helplessness about extinction.

According to the calculation of time in Buddhist texts, one ksana is equal to 0.018 seconds, so each photo contains 99,000 ksanas. The Buddha, meanwhile, said that one ksana contains 900 births and extinctions, referring to the birth and death of 900 lives in the world.

I describe this work in this way because I think it ties in with the essential interpretation of photography: The moment of pressing the shutter also pays tribute to the infinite time, sacrificing existence for passing away, exchanging doubt for enlightenment, and using “me" to reflect everything in the world.Faramita Flowers - poetry for unknown from old photosInkjet print on Hahnemuehle Photo Rag Ultra smooth paper

The old photos come from some old films dated over 80 years ago. The people in these photos were a family living in Shanghai, with decent looks and nice camera skills, but without names.Faramita Flowers - poetry for unknown from old photosInkjet print on Hahnemuehle Photo Rag Ultra smooth paper
In one of the photos, there is a woman surrounded by equinox flowers, also known as Manjusaka. It is a kind of plant in which the flowers and leaves never exist at the same time, and it becomes a legendary plant that grows on the banks of hell's river in the Buddhist myths. It also becomes a metaphor for wisdom.

The movements of the rays of the scanner whilst working remind us of the ruthless years that pass by. Wind blows. Bones scatter. Petals decay. The laughters and smiles in the past times are illuminated once again. The old fading images become vivid and new. Yet when this process of renewal is done, the hourglass would be turned upside down again, starting another segment of fading and forgetting.
