Shenyang chi K11 Art Space is pleased to present Manuel Mathieu’s solo exhibition "Rising from the Ashes" in collaboration with HdM GALLERY. The exhibition is curated by curator Feng Boyi. The exhibition will run from 14 October to 24 December 2023.

About the Exhibition

Shenyang chi K11 Art Space is pleased to collaborate with HdM GALLERY to present Manuel Mathieu’s solo exhibition "Rising from the Ashes" curated by Feng Boyi. The exhibition is the second stop of this travelling show. The meaning of "Rising from the Ashes" is that after experiencing the torment of flame and pain, the phoenix was reborn and achieved sublimation in rebirth.

Curator Feng Boyi tried to use Manuel Mathieu’s immigration, migration, surviving on nomadic land outside, multiple identities, experience-creation, artistic "alchemy" and multi-media visual language to present his vision, living with "localization" and an inner narrative of personal feeling and caring. This not only includes an attitude of "self-regard" within globalization, among different cultures interacting with each other, but also the anxiety and entanglement of "finding one’s home". The exhibition will present some recent paintings, ceramics, installations and recording videos.

About the Artist

Manuel Mathieu was born in 1986 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He studied Visual and Media Arts at the University of Quebec, Montreal and obtained a Master’s in Fine Arts from Goldsmiths College, London in 2016. He enjoyed solo presentations of his work at the Power Plant in Toronto as well as at the Museum of Fine Arts Montreal in 2020.

More recently, he participated in group exhibitions at the Grand Palais, Paris, Art Museum of the Americas, Washington, D.C. London Institute of Contemporary Art, HdM GALLERY, Beijing, and Gagosian Gallery, London. His works were collected by the Rubell Family, the JP Morgan Chase Group in New York, the Longlati Foundation, and is part of the national collections of Canada and Haiti.
