Steve Noble

Steve Noble 是英国伦敦首屈一指的鼓手，也是一名无所畏惧、不断推陈出新的即兴音乐家。他以有着超常精确性、超强爆发力和超高细节度的演奏著称，并与来自世界各地的音乐家广泛合作，如 Derek Bailey、Matthew Shipp、Wadada Leo Smith、Stephen O'Malley、Peter Brötzmann、Joe McPhee 和 Rhodri Davie 等。

Alex Ward

Steve Noble

Steve Noble is London's leading drummer, a fearless and constantly inventive improviser whose super-precise, ultra-propulsive and hyper-detailed playing has galvanized encounters with Derek Bailey, Matthew Shipp, Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith, Stephen O'Malley, Peter Brötzmann, Joe McPhee, Alex Ward, Rhodri Davies and many, many more. 

Noble studied with the Nigerian master drummer Elkan Ogunde. In early 1980s, he was a member of the avant-garde jazz-pop group, Rip Rig and Panic. He had also worked in this period with Brion Gysin and the Bow Gamelan Ensemble, before going on to work with the pianist Alex Maguire and with Derek Bailey (including 1987, 89 and 90). He was featured in Bailey's excellent TV series On the Edge: Improvisation in Music for Channel 4 based on Bailey’s book Improvisation: Its Nature and Practice in Music. He has toured and performed throughout Europe, Africa and America and currently leads the groups N.E.W (with John Edwards and Alex Ward) and DECOY (with John Edwards and Alexander Hawkins).

Alex Ward

Alex Ward's diverse musical activities since the early '90s have straddled the worlds of free improvisation, contemporary composition and avant rock, and have seen him collaborate with such significant musical figures as Derek Bailey, Lol Coxhill, Eugene Chadbourne, Simon H. Fell, Thurston Moore, Joe Morris, Evan Parker, Pat Thomas and Weasel Walter, amongst a host of others.

He was an integral part of Charles Bullen and Charles Hayward's acclaimed This Is Not This Heat project, and in 2021 he became a member of the legendary band Pere Ubu. His work as a composer/bandleader has encompassed his own ensembles such as Predicate, Forebrace, the Alex Ward Quintet/Sextet and Items 4 & 10, alongside collaborative projects such as his duos with Dominic Lash, Jem Doulton (as Dead Days Beyond Help) and Sean Noonan (as Noonward), while his solo releases have ranged from unaccompanied performances on clarinet and guitar to the layered studio creations found on 2021's Gated. He brings a unique energy and inventiveness to all these projects, elevating them far above the ordinary and injecting them with a thrilling sense of danger and possibility. 

Much of his work is documented on the label Copepod, which he co-runs with Luke Barlow.

作为享誉世界的日本大师级鼓手，森山威男自始至终从心而活。

60 年代末，他还是东京艺术大学打击乐系的一名学生时，便从所受的古典音乐教育中“叛逃”，纵身投入了爵士乐。他经常参加各类爵士活动，从而和山下洋辅成为了密友，并以鼓手身份加入了当时刚成立的山下洋辅三重奏。此后的六年间，他们从籍籍无名的毛头小子成长为最受海外关注的日本自由爵士乐队，三次欧洲巡演均大获成功，好评如潮。在此期间，森山发展出一套自己独特的演奏技法和风格，并将其不断推向极致。

1975 年，正当乐队事业如日中天之际，森山却选择了按下暂停键，转身去探寻新的激情与意义。他开始在爵士老巢“Aketa的店”进行鼓教学，并常态化地与大量乐手交流合作。也是在这个过程中，森山威男四重奏逐渐成型。多年间其成员数度变化，其中包括贝斯手望月英明，萨克斯手高桥知己、小田切一巳、滕原干典，以及分别在不同时期担任乐队主创的钢琴手板桥文夫和萨克斯手井上淑彦。

进入新世纪以后，森山依然没有停下音乐的脚步，更多以个人身份与东西方的爵士音乐家进行合作。

此次的“无钢琴四重奏”，是森山先生特别为本届 OCT-LOFT 国际爵士音乐节组建的全新乐队。带着赤子之心，直击灵魂！

When he was in university in the late 1960s, Moriyama Takeo did not like the education on classical percussion he received. He began to participate in jazz sessions, and became close friends with Yosuke Yamashita, , and later joined the newly formed Yosuke Yamashita Trio as a drummer. In the following six years, the Trio had become the most internationally renowned Japanese free jazz band, having had three wildly successful European tours with raving reviews. It was during this period that Moriyama culminated his distinct form of free jazz.

After leaving the Yosuke Yamashita Trio, he led his own Takeo Moriyama Quartet, and had collaborated with Aki Takase, Akira Miyazawa, Fumio Itabashi, Masahiko Satoh, Peter Brötzmann, Manfred Schoof and many more.

He has won in 2001 the 35th Jazz Disc Adward (Japanese Jazz) by Japan’s leading jazz magazine Swing Journal and Excellence Award for recording category in the 56th ACA National Arts Festival. For his significant contribution to the development of Japanese jazz, he was awarded the 27th Fumio Nanri Award in 2002 (i.e. the Jazz Japan Award since 2011).

Moriyama specially collected this Pianoless Quartet for the OCT-LOFT Jazz Festival.
