Follow like a shadow

上海圣佳艺术空间

回忆通常在多种形式下浮现，承载不同的情感分量。然而无论我们如何试图分类这些回忆，每当它们再次浮现在思绪中，情感一定总是紧密相连的。它们就像影子一样时刻跟随在生活的航行。这次群展展现13位备受瞩目的年轻艺术家作品，他们的绘画常常根植于深刻熟悉自己的回忆和情感，透过作品呈现出独特的内在视角，善于将这些回忆呈现在画布上，以个性化而独特的方式，将如影随形的记忆重新编织后显现。

除去记忆，当代艺术在当下受到科技和人工智能的影响，这包括对于影响探讨的记忆内容呈现在画布上的方式，尽管一些艺术家试图摆脱与艺术历史的紧密联系，展示数字时代对当代艺术的影响，但也有一些艺术家坚持继承了艺术史中的笔触传统。这一融合面貌在本次展览中也深有体现。作为如影随形的另一层延伸理解，从而体现艺术家独特艺术语言的相似与差异。

Memories can manifest in diverse forms, carrying different emotional weights. Yet, no matter how we attempt to classify these memories, they are consistently intertwined with emotions whenever they resurface in our minds. It's as though they are akin to shadows, unexpectedly emerging as we navigate through our lives. This group exhibition features 13 artists who intimately acquaint themselves with their memories and emotions, offering their distinctive perspectives on these inner experiences. They bring these emotions to light on the canvas, externalizing the shadows of their minds in a unique and personal way.

In the current contemporary art scene, aside from painting memories, therefore the pervasive influence of technology and artificial intelligence extends to the manner in which memory-related content finds expression on the canvas. While some artists strive to emancipate themselves from a tightly woven tapestry of art history, thereby illuminating the digital age's impact on contemporary art, there are those who steadfastly cling to the heritage of traditional brushwork from the annals of art history. This fusion finds profound manifestation in this exhibition. Serving as an extended layer of interpretation, follow like a shadow, it accentuates both the commonalities and distinctions within each artist's unique artistic language.

Wang chaoqun studied at Repin Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg and Surikov Academy of Fine Arts in Moscow. He lives in Shanghai.

贾卉1993年出⽣于云南昆明，2017年毕业于芝加哥艺术学院，获学⼠学位，⽬前⼯作⽣活于上海。贾卉的绘画与雕塑创作直接运⽤形、⾊、线、质地、体积等基础元素指涉宇宙万物的概念，构成不同的抽象空间以及空间切片。作品反映了艺术家在空⽩画布上对于“⽆中⽣有”的理解，尤其通过绘画实践，艺术家检验并探索了空无之间的碰撞，即兴发生，直觉以及理性的各种姿势互相渗透和抑制所产生的全新图像。她相信绘画媒介内部的绘画永不消亡，依旧涵着它诗意的空间。

JIA Hui (b.1993, Kunming, Yunnan) graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a BFA in 2017. She currently lives and works in Shanghai. JIA Hui’s practice explores sections of abstract apparatuses constructed with formal elements, such as shape, color, line, texture and volume in painting and sculpture. By creating metaphorical forms that resonate with existing entities in the universe, JIA’s practice manifests the understanding of “create something from nothing.” In particular, through her paintings, the artist examines and explores how instant, intuitive and logical gestures collide, penetrate and restrain into visually poetic and unprecedented images of the void.

Lin Cong graduated from the College of Fine Arts, Fujian Normal University in 2006, majoring in oil painting, now works and lives in Shanghai. Lin Cong's artistic practice is about how to rationally incubate the accident freely in the invisible discipline of art history. His painting materials float on cloth, reflective material, resin or other random objects, confounding the complete subjectivity of the visual level with a loose stagnation. Artists manipulate static images to show change and process; Remembering the passage of time through forgetfulness. Fragile coherence and semiotic naivete are constantly high lighted as an endogenous, detypified “present image”.

张炜，1983年生于浙江温岭; 2003 年完成德国柏林艺术大学巴度尔教授的夏季学院绘画课程; 2004 年 4 月完成德国艺术家克里斯蒂安(Abraham David Christian)教授的绘画课程; 2005 年毕业于中国美术学院综合艺术系; 现工作及生活于上海。在张炜的作品中，人或物都是没有轮廓的，单薄的，魅影似的，只是小片色块与色块间的交叠拼凑；他所取用的色彩带来一种抽离感，在还原着半醒的梦境中即将与现实交汇的不确定的视觉认知。色彩对于张炜来说等同能量，色彩的构成犹如炼金术士的实验，看似依赖偶发实质遵循严谨的科学逻辑；色彩需经由千锤百炼的实验方可提纯其中蕴涵的情感。画面所流露的德国表现主义式的虚梦醉境，使观者坠入漫游者的世界里，生活中的细碎片段像水滴一样流入心底，像勾起回忆的蒙太奇，建构起异化了现实时间与空间的平行世界，令人烦扰的心理基调和无明显形象特征的人物也无疑唤起了蒙克式的幽闭恐惧症的焦虑。这些幽灵似的人物，或即将走向观众，或正在远离，在恍惚的梦境里飘忽不定；这场非虚非实的叙事中，观者的主体视角与被观看的客体视角之间的“裂痕”得以被“缝合”。

Zhang Wei (b.1983) was born in Wenling, Zhejiang Province, China; he completed the Summer Academy Painting Course taught by Professor Badol at the University of the Arts, Berlin, Germany in 2003; he completed the Painting Course taught by German artist Abraham David Christian in April 2004; he graduated from the Department of Integrated Arts of the China Academy of Art in 2005; he now lives and works in Shanghai. The people and objects in Zhang Wei's work are featureless, thin, and ghostly, just small blobs of color layered on top of each other. The colors he uses to create abstract sensations reproduce the uncertain visual perception of the impending intersection with reality in a half-waking dream world. The color scheme resembles an alchemical experiment that seems to be episodic but follows strict scientific logic. Purifying the emotions contained in colors requires thousands of experiments to refine them.

于航，1987年出生于吉林，肄业与上海大学美术学院。现居住和工作在上海。他近来的绘画围绕着骷髅这个意象，骷髅经常在艺术史的图像中出现，在宗教题材甚至静物画中，它总在提醒着死亡与虚无。但骷髅的形象也不仅仅是被用来醒世，它时常意味着危险与威吓，比如在“有毒!”，或者“我是海盗!” 这类语境中，尤其是后者，随着海盗文化的传奇化与娱乐化，这个原本作为湿婆法器的形象也早已失去了其文化上的法力。于航把骷髅画得很可爱，他用一种涂鸦风格的幽默感，把骷髅变成了一种图案形象，以至于让骷髅成了一种装饰物，类似于“心”形。这是他的一种工作方法，把那些普遍分布于不同文化中的符号提取出来，变成今天我们可以围绕其不断编织故事的基本母题。

Yu Hang,  born in Jilin in 1987, studied at Shanghai University's Academy of Fine Arts. He currently lives and works in Shanghai. Yu Hang's recent paintings are centered around the imagery of the skeleton, which has often appeared in art historical imagery, in religious themes, and even in still life paintings, as a reminder of death and nothingness. But the image of the skull is not only used as a wake-up call to the world, but it also often implies danger and intimidation, as in "Poison!" or "I'm a pirate!" In these contexts, especially the latter, the image of Shiva as an instrument of magic has long since lost its cultural power as pirate culture has become legendary and entertaining.

罗京1992年生于内蒙古呼和浩特，现工作和生活于河北燕郊。2018年毕业于中央美术学院油画系第一工作室，获学士学位。罗京的作品灵感，来源于生活中常见的一些工作场景，描绘了工作者当时的状态与他主观联想中的空间，他希望探讨常规中的可能性与不确定性。罗京的作品以一种简单而完整的构图，聊以自娱，好似蛮不在乎，但是却以饱有理想的语言诠释出来。仿佛用一种拙朴的叙事，讲述自成体系的道理。“我”以何种的目光去判断，抑或追逐着怎样的理想，现实与幻象所产生的不平衡性 ，使看似有意义的目的通过自我调侃而得以内化，这种堂吉诃德式的历险，一直充斥其中。作品中轻重缓急有着自己的平衡感，非讨好式的画面以冷静的方式制造一种过分理想主义的粗暴行为。用超现实的幽默描绘某种僵硬的造型，隐喻的趣味以平衡某个寻常捕捉的概念，选择性地保留作品中的神秘感。

Luo Jing(b.1992, Hohhot) graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2018. Luo Jing's works are inspired by some common work scenes in his life, depicting the workers' state at that time and the space in his subjective association, he wants to explore the possibilities and uncertainties in the routine. Luo Jing's works use a simple and complete composition to amuse himself, as if he doesn't care, but he interprets it in a language full of ideals. It seems to use a simple narrative to tell the truth of its own system. What kind of vision "I" use to judge, or what kind of ideal I am chasing, the imbalance caused by reality and illusion, so that the seemingly meaningful purpose can be internalized through self-ridicule, this kind of Quixotic Adventures have always been filled with it. There is a sense of balance in the work's priorities, and the non-flattering images create a kind of over-idealistic brutality in a calm way. Use surreal humor to depict a certain rigid shape, and use metaphorical fun to balance an ordinary captured concept, selectively retaining the sense of mystery in the work.

刘家铭，1996年生, 2019年毕业于四川美术学院油画系学士学位, 2023年毕业于广州美术学院油画系硕士学位, 现生活工作于广州。刘家铭的作品基于大量的图像资料作为参考，艺术家在创作时不仅要考虑图像本身所携带的符号与元素的指向性，还会留意在使用这些图像在当下的意义。通过对能刺激到自身的图像进行收集和整理，艺术家继而创造出一个未知的世界，它可以是一个空间，也可以是一种幻象，或者是现实世界的映像。在近几年的新作中，艺术家想表现的是在虚假繁荣回归到人物的内心，在一种内部与外部的压力下人的真实状态。

Liu Jiaming, born in 1996, graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts with a bachelor's degree in 2019, and graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts with a master's degree in 2023. He currently lives and works in Guangzhou. Liu Jiaming's works are based on a lot of image materials as reference. When creating, the artist must not only consider the directionality of the symbols and elements carried by the images themselves, but also pay attention to the current significance of using these images. By collecting and organizing images that stimulate him, the artist then creates an unknown world, which can be a space, an illusion, or a reflection of the real world. In his new works in recent years, the artist wants to express the true state of people under internal and external pressure when false prosperity returns to the characters' hearts.
