ASE基金会于2023年10月26日推出周年特展“即席之美”。本次展览由常驻上海的袁佳维担任策展人,包含委任艺术家拉斐尔·多梅内克(Rafael Domenech)等19位/组国内外艺术家共同参展,作品涵盖绘画、雕塑、装置、摄影、录像等诸多媒介。
为庆祝ASE基金会在上海落成的艺术空间已开放一年有余,特展“即席之美”旨在以更具批判性和参与性的方式重新处理并再次定义其所兼容的藏书功能以及在此基础上建成的展厅,策展人、委任艺术家与观众的集体行动将嵌入展览过程本身,使得社区实践的概念在ASE基金会的公共活动中生根,从而催生出一个在集群运作下“各执己见”的共同体。
On the occasion of celebrating the inauguration of ASE Art Space in Shanghai for more than a year, “By Virtue of Situated Compromise” is devised to re-address and redefine its compatible function as a library – upon which a gallery is built – by engaging a rather critical participatory approach with a collective action of the curator, the commissioned artist and the audience. Embedded in the curatorial process itself, the idea of community practice takes root in the public programmes of the ASE Foundation, exploring clustering operations in the context of consensus-reaching paths that take into account non-cooperative behaviours.

策展人从展览标题的双关性出发:“即席”在汉语中原就包含“就坐入席”与“即兴发挥”这两层含义;而英文的“By Virtue of Situated Compromise”在字面意义上接近于“因地制宜”,其所象征的“居间”且“折中”的动势呼应着德国建筑师与作家马库斯·米森(Markus Miessen)提出的“即中立席”(crossbenching),源于政治术语“中立人士”(crossbencher),指机构中不属于任何特定派系、保持独立的成员。策展人选择了一条挑战传统空间角色的路径,围绕着打破建筑等级制度和既定规范的立场,主张以兼收并蓄的态度协同委任艺术家的场域特定装置《间接作用》进行干预。
因此,“即席之美”意味着接受更具包容性的审美、设计和决策机制,将向观众呼吁并提倡读书与观展作为一种学习本身是一项社会化的活动。ASE基金会期待与大家共创多元文化价值。
The curator starts from the plurality of the title. “By Virtue of Situated Compromise” means to symbolise the dynamic of intermediation and the exercise of an eclectic method, echoing the conception of “crossbenching” proposed by German architect and writer Markus Miesen. Derived from the political term “crossbencher” which refers to the independent member in an organisation who does not belong to any particular faction, it is literally parallel to the notion of “taking measures adapted to local conditions” (yīn-dì-zhì-yí) as an idiom in Chinese. Thus the double implication of the first two characters in the Chinese subject “jí-xí” – to be seated and to improvise – resonates. The curator has deliberately chosen a path that challenges the traditional role of privatised space, centred around a stance that breaks down its architectural hierarchies and established norms, and favours an embracing gesture in collaboration with the commissioned artist and his site-specific installation The Affordance of the Oblique.

(1989年生于古巴哈瓦那,现生活工作于美国纽约)在古巴社会主义制度中长大并接受教育,对建筑空间和公共宣传的兴趣为多梅内克的作品奠定了基础。拉斐尔·多梅内克作为一位跨学科艺术家,他致力于探索建筑、城市设计和当代材料生产的概念,以开发和制作不同类型的物质和空间,如实验性出版物、展馆、装置和公共项目。多梅内克的建筑干预与出版方式相连通,如切割、编辑、修订和流通,并以此作为研究策略,进一步阐释他对于展览模式的关注。展览作为一个积极的生产机器,而不仅仅是一个存储容器;作品、观众和空间的交互与集成形成了绝对的整体体验。

(b. 1989 Havana, Cuba; lives and works in New York, US) Having grown up and been educated in a socialist system in Cuba, an interest in architectural spaces and public propaganda defined the foundation for Domenech's work. Rafael Domenech is at the forefront of a new generation of artists that are redefining the exhibition experience. He explores notions of architecture, urban design, and contemporary material productions to develop and produce different typologies of objects and spaces, such as experimental publications, pavilions, installations, and public programs. Domenech’s architectural interventions intersect publishing methodologies such as cutting, redacting, revising, and circulation as research tactics to amplify his interest in the exhibition model as an active machine for production rather than a repository space; the project seeks to create a hanging archive, where the interaction and integration of work, viewer, and space form an absolute, overall experience.
His work has been exhibited at SculptureCenter; Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City; The Storefront for Art and Architecture, New York; The Bass Museum, Miami Beach; Phillip and Patricia Frost Art Museum, Miami; Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York; Artium Museum, Vitoria, Spain; Fredric Snitzer Gallery, Miami; and Hua International Gallery, Berlin, and Beijing. He was the recipient of an award from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the Tulsa Artist Fellowship, and the Cintas Fellowship. He holds an MFA from Columbia University.

Hua International is a contemporary art gallery located in Berlin and Beijing whose exhibitions, publications, and public programming supports cross-disciplinary and performative artistic practices. The gallery focuses on developing long-term relationships with its represented artists and leverages its geographic bilocation as a means to critically expand how their work can be presented and received in radically diverse cultural contexts.
After two years curating the experimental art and performance project XC.Hua, Xioachan Hua founded Hua International in August 2020 and inaugurated the new gallery with spaces in Berlin’s historic Mercator Höfe and Beijing’s acclaimed 798 Arts District.
