Shun Art Gallery is honored to announce the solo exhibition "The Invisible World" for Japanese artist Shingo Iguchi in our Shanghai space. This exhibition is Shingo Iguchi's first solo exhibition in China. As a cartoonist, Iguchi Shingo launched the "Z Project" in 1984 based on the world of the comic character "Z CHAN" to explore the possibilities of characters in the virtual world through comics, picture books, poetry, paintings, performances, music, etc., which present a world full of philosophical implications that folds three times and spaces.

Iguchi carefully weaves an interesting story frame and a series of mysterious symbols. Z CHAN, whose symbol is a pointed hat and eye patch, was born in LOTUS HEAVEN (dream world), without parents and no memory, and lived with the blue mouse in the hole in the wall. ROSE was born into a wealthy family in ROSE HEAVEN (the real world) and loves shopping. One day, she was lost in the forest and was taken to LOTUS HEAVEN by KATO...

In 1994, Iguchi created Vanrogh, a "bear" from the "invisible world", and the zipper on its body is the entrance to the "invisible world"... Inguchi, who loves philosophy, cleverly integrates Zen thoughts into the story, and the characters talk in the form of "Zen Questions and Answers"「ぜんもんどう」. If we trace the origin of philosophy, the earliest form of language is question and answer. Enlightenment will not shut out those who are thirsty for the truth because of obscure language.

The characters with cute attributes and flat style polished by Iguchi rely on the story clues that have been refined for nearly 40 years, and embark on a magical journey full of imagination, experience and reflection. Comics were all the rage in the 1980s, and various publishers competed to publish his comics. He was once placed in an important position in the picture book and comics circles on the back label of the classical art magazine「Bijutsu Techo」.

Since 2000, Iguchi has shifted his creation to the field of contemporary art. He dismantled and reconstructed the elements of the "Z CHAN" comics. Simple black-and-white outlines formed the basis of spatial expression. Simple, bright color tiles, as well as cute raised dots that often appear, form Iguchi's signature painting style.

Iguchi is also a master of using and creating symbols. There are 108 points in the picture. 108 has been a sacred number since ancient times. For example, Buddhism means to eliminate one hundred and eight kinds of troubles. The oval picture frame is also a zero shape composed of 108 points and is named "Lotus Ring". It is the door to the world of "Z CHAN".

For another example, the character KATO who protects ROSE existed long before the story began and exists anytime and anywhere. Sometimes he appears in the opposite image of black KATO and white KATO, vaguely pointing to the transcendental soul of man. Playing with Iguchi’s numerous symbols, which play, spread, and extend, becoming strong fibres in the story, becoming organic and growable.
