BROWNIE Project 正于2023年西岸艺术与设计博览会欣然呈现艺术家郭盈光最新的个人创作项目,并以单独项目空间的形式呈现于展位当中。该项目源自她基于泰国当地有关于自然神性与人群膜拜的社会事件,结合艺术家深入驻扎于当地的在地性研究与个人经验,以她个人的身体角色为载体而创作的多媒材雕塑、视频、影像、诗歌作品,试图在艺博会中构建出一处临时的信仰依存之隅。

我们很荣幸地邀请郭盈光讲述此次展出的项目作品及近年的创作实践。


BROWNIE Project is presenting the latest creations by artist Guo Yingguang as a special project in the 2023 West Bund Art and Design Fair.  This project  originates from social events related to natural deities and worship in Thailand, combined with the artist's in-depth local research and personal experiences. Using her body as a carrier to produce multi-media sculpture, video, photography and poetry, it attempts to construct a temporary corner of faith in the art fair.

“16岁的女孩在曼谷传统的观音选美年度比赛中获胜,

她将代表慈悲女神,在新年中的一天接受整个城市的膜拜…

一天的神性。

获胜者在巡游的那天即使因为泰国天气炎热而中暑在花车上,

在拥有最后一丝清醒时还坚持摆着观音的手势和姿态。”


“我坐船来到了海中央的山洞,站在山洞中,

我被巨大的山体包裹,

安静的山洞又似乎放大了水滴和树木生长的声音,

我感到安全,又莫名的愁惧。

我穿过山洞,来到一块平坦又巨大的山石前,

山石上摆满了上百座用小石头垒起的石堆,

石堆的缝隙中还有密密麻麻根根竖起的树枝,

它们依附在山石上,看起来渺小又脆弱…

我看到这些前人留下的痕迹,

他们把自己的愿望寄托在自然里,

不断地被垒起来,又被时间推到…”



"A 16-year-old girl has won the annual traditional Guanyin Pageant Bangkok,she will represent the Goddes of Mercy to accept the worship of the entire city on new year's day... a day of divinity. Though that day she has heat stroke on the float in Thailand's hot weather, she still managed to keep the Guanyin gesture in her last consciousness."

"I took a boat and arrived at a cave in the middle of the sea. Standing in the cave, I was enveloped by the huge mountains. The quietness seems to amplify the sound of water dropping and trees growing, I felt safe yet shomehow am scared. I passed through the cave and reached a huge flat rock, on which were hundreds of small stone mounds. There were densely packed branches growing between the stones gaps, they clung to the stones, tiny and fragile...I saw these traces left by the predecessors, they place their hope in nature, continuously accumulated, and crashed by time..."

作品“A More Enjoyable Samsaric Existence 更愉悦的三世生活”是由蛋壳、丙烯综合媒介和摄影相结合而成,蛋壳作为郭盈光近年一贯使用的媒材语言,在整个系列中得到延用。被蛋壳包裹的树枝和人手相连接的图像,是个体将超越现实的美好愿望寄托于自然。作品被镶嵌在木板中,也瓦解了边框作为图像的依附物,使边框提升到图像同等重要的位置。


“A More enjoyable Samsaric Existence" is a work of egg shells, acrylic and photography. Egg shells, a media constantly favoured by the artist in recent years, have been used throughout this project. A branch wrapped in egg shells and held by human hand is parallel to one places beautiful surreal wishes in nature. The work is embeded in wood, dismantling the frame as a attachment to image while elevating it to an equally important position.

“Merit, Merit, Crack 善,善,裂痕” 这件和真人等比的人型雕塑被充满裂痕的蛋壳和贝母小心翼翼地拼凑完整,既是虔诚膜拜又好似对末来末知充满向往的身体姿态,让人联想到东南亚寺庙墙壁上常见的水磨石镶嵌画,欲以定格下生命的循环与更新。


"Merit, Merit, Crack" This life-size sculpture is meticulously pieced together by eggshells and fritillaries. Both a devout worship gesture and a body posture full of longing for the unknown future, reminiscent of the terrazzo inlavs often seen on temple walls in Southeast Asia. which intends to freeze the cvcle and renewal of life.

“A Day of Divinity 一天神性”是一件由木头、不锈钢、造景植被、蛋壳等人造与自然材料相结合的雕塑作品,它将变形后的“手”与被风吹过的火焰形象结合,再被细细的杆子穿过,插在由蛋壳爬藤环绕的烛台底座上。观者仰望这件接近三米的作品,在体会崇高感的同时似乎也恐惧于它摇摇欲坠的临时性。


"A Day of Divinity" is a sculpture that combines artificial and natural materials such as wood, stainless steel, landscaping vegetation and egg shells. It integrates the deformed "hand" with the wind-blown flame, threaded by a thin stick, planted in a candlestick base covered by egg shells. A sense o sublimity vet precarious temporalitv is reit while looking up to this almost three meter piece.

郭盈光的艺术实践围绕公共性议题,将个人经验向公共性敞开,再将外部的反馈与冲击收束至个体反思和作品延展,渗透着公共性与私密性的互博状态。她擅于用跨媒介艺术实践,结合装置、摄影、雕塑、绘画、影像、行为等,与外部结构进行相互构建,并传达出细腻而丰富的现场情绪,常以细腻利落的视觉语言与具有争议性的创作主题于艺术世界和社会视野中引发思辨与讨论。


郭盈光,1983年生于中国辽宁,伦敦艺术大学传媒学院摄影硕士,中国传媒大学艺术摄影专业学士,现居住工作于北京与华欣。郭盈光在艺术家生涯伊始即凭借《顺从的幸福》系列作品获得2017年集美·阿尔勒Madame Figaro女性摄影师奖,受到法国阿尔勒国际摄影节官方展览邀请及Sophie Calle(苏菲·卡尔)、Paul Graham(保罗·格雷厄姆)等国际艺术家的推荐。2019年,应Simon Baker(西蒙·贝克,原泰特首席摄影策展人;现巴黎欧洲摄影馆总监及策展人)之邀,郭盈光首个个展”郭盈光:顺从的幸福”于巴黎欧洲摄影馆(Maison Européenne de la Photographie)开幕,郭盈光也是首位在该艺术机构举办个展的中国女性艺术家。


经过持续数年的自反与创作推翻,以应对外部舆论冲击,2022年郭盈光带来第二个同名个展,以更为抽象、立体与机敏的创作形式,延续她与外部公共/社会结构进行双向批判性接纳与嵌合的艺术实践,个体身份与个人经验开始以新的立场出现。


Guo Yingguang’s artistic practice revolves around public issues, opening up personal experiences to the public, then incorporating external feedbacks and impacts into individual reflection and extension on works, suffused a tug between publicity and privacy. She is adept at multi-media practice, combing installation, videography, sculpture, painting, photography, happening as well as external composition to convey abundant yet delicate emotions. She often adopts intricate and concise visual language, controversial themes, to lead reflection and spark discussion in both the art world as well as in society. 

Guo Yingguang, born in 1983 in Liaoning, China, holds a Master’s degree in Photography from London College of Communication (UAL), a Bachelor’s degree in Photography Communication University of China. She currently lives and works in Beijing and Huaxin. Guo Yingguang has won Jimei ARLES  2017 Madame Figaro Women Photography Festival with the series “The Bliss of Conformity” at the start of her career and was invited to exhibit at Rencontres d’Arles International Photography Festival in France. She was recommended by international artists such as Sophie Calle and Paul Graham. In 2019, at the invitation of Simon Baker (former chief photography curator at Tate), Guo Yingguang’s first solo exhibition “Guo Yingguang: The Bliss of Happiness” opened at Maison Européenne de la Photographie, making her the first Chinese female artist to hold a solo exhibition at MEP.

After years of reflexivity and creative overthrow to cope with public voices, Guo Yingguang’s second solo exhibition realized in 2022 with a more abstract, integrate and agile method to experiment her practice, continuing her path of two-way critical acceptance on external public/social structure and chimeric art, illustrating individual identity and personal experiences in new perspectives.
