谁选的？首先，这27人和他们的作品，是从第七届约翰·莫尔绘画奖（中国）获奖及入围画家中挑选出来的。他们是由五位国际评委在绘画比赛的多轮评比中挑选的。现在又经策展团队的综合评估，在近百位入围者中选出了他们。这样的遴选方法很少见。

同样少见的是展览呈现，是由四个W构成的。一，Where对应的是景；二，What对应的是物；三，Who对应的是人；四，When对应的是纪实。这四个类别既有对历史传统的观照，更多的则是对当下的现实与审美的回应。

此外，为什么展？这是个探索性的收藏展。探索什么？中国当下绘画有没有收藏价值？从何处入手收藏？两年一届的约翰·莫尔绘画奖（中国）是一个有国际视野，又直接切入中国当下绘画的平台。由此入手，其意义不用多言。

一个展览，如果经由顶尖评委精选，从潜力画家的作品中发现闪耀着当下光彩的力作，那么它就不是一个审美问题、鉴赏问题，更有文献意义与历史价值。特别在大变革的今天，它的历史节点性愈加鲜明。

We are delighted to present this group of 27 paintings made in the last three years by 27 different artists resident in China. We hope you enjoy looking at them and talking about them. Art is alive only when it is shared!    

How were they chosen? The 7th John Moore Painting Prize (China) was selected by  five artists appointed as international judges. Multiple rounds of selection ended with a shortlist for exhibition of more than 100 paintings, including the 5 prizewinning paintings. After a comprehensive evaluation, the curatorial team then selected 27 artists (including the prize-winners) from among those shortlisted for main John Moores Painting Prize exhibition. The artists have loaned the paintings presented here. Such a selection method is unusual.

Equally rare is the exhibition presentation, which is made up of the four W's – where, what, who, when/how? If we look at all the images produced throughout history, they can be categorised in response to these basic questions. We have decided to attribute these contemporary paintings to one or another of these historic experiential categories, to stimulate looking, thinking and discussion about them.

John Moores Painting Competition is selected by an outstanding jury, and the quality of the paintings presented has been tested through searching discussion. We are confident that the exhibited paintings merit attention for their aesthetics, but we further commend them for their documentary significance and historical value. Especially at this time of great change, the historical contribution of John Moores Painting Prize China is more and more distinctive.
