郑志明,1963年生于上海。职业画家。中国美术家协会会员。八十年代创作连环画《十日谈》、《第四十一》等多部作品,并多次获奖。
Zhiming Zheng was born in 1963 Shanghai, Professional painter, Member of Chinese artists association. In the 1980s, he created many works such as the 'Decameron' and the 'Forty-First', and won many awards.

“无端起知见,着相求菩提” 这便是我们想要说而无法说的事。


“如相”展出郑志明近年来创作的108幅与脸相关的作品,108张脸代表着众生,代表着好汉,众生即如来,好汉亦为如来。禅说:“张口便错,动念便乖”。所以依旧不能说,不说,偏又不甘心,所以让视觉说。也许,这就是“如相”的缘起。


艺术家的故事是一个与宗教很少勾连的故事,是一个关于艺术家与艺术“涅槃”的故事。痛来但超脱于痛,苦去却不止于苦 —— 妙明真心才是故事本来面目。

郑志明是一个纯粹的艺术家,他的作品线索可以非常清晰地划分成二个阶段:写实与写意,即情景与情绪。在情景描绘与情绪表达中间,志明兄生了一场大病。歁破生死之后,志明兄义无反顾地努力将其深厚的写实功底完全忘却,忘却业已习惯的绘画模式,转身追求虚无混沌中的真理之光,这需要毅力,这样的忘却在一定的程度上与生死聚于一线的瞬间有相似之处。

本次在黑白之中画廊呈现的展览“如相”依然延续了艺术家对“情绪”这个问题的不安与思考,但以108条好汉为题,艺术家显然有话要说。“在痛苦中我懂得了什么是生命中真正重要的东西:对精神世界的向往和追求才是一个人成其为人的本质所在。对我来说就是在绘画中与自我对话,画出我的人生态度,画出与自身生存环境有联系的作品,颠覆自己,走回自己的内心”。在工作室,我见到了几百幅与脸相关的作品,这是这些年来艺术家深陷其中的最好证明,在那些呼之欲出,惊心动魄的脸上,我读到了人心深处的恐惧。而恐惧背后则是生命的本质__灵魂,它不仅指向一般意义的视觉呈现,还象征着整个人类以及由人类“创造”的历史、政治、文化与社会的存在与消亡,艺术家以其强悍有力的绘画语言以及充满张力的笔触,直达人性深处的独具个性的价值。郑志明说他一直想在绘画中表现人物内在极端的心理状态,呈现的是人物、空气、记忆和时间在一霎凝固的感觉,艺术既把精神性当做趣文轶事,也是创造具体存在的唯一途径,它充满了骤变与沉静。说到底,“如相”描绘的是人类复杂的精神世界。艺术家在视觉中呈现恐惧、忧郁和孤独,在放弃结构塑造之后张扬视觉的矛盾与痛苦。大胆奔放的笔触,沉着丰富的色彩,作品给人强烈的刺激感,充满着紧张不安、压抑悲伤的情绪。人物造型绝非符号的垒砌,视觉中有身体、思维、混沌感官;有对生命探寻、震惊、抗争、无奈的情绪幻化,也有酸楚凄厉的灵魂呼喊,这种似乎是生理感官又仿佛灵魂出窍的艺术体验,令你欲辩已忘言。

‘Understanding, seeing and asking for Bodhi’. This is what we want to say but cannot say.


"Ruxiang (Phases)" exhibits 108 face-related works created by Zheng Zhiming in recent years. The 108 faces represent sentient beings and heroes, who are all alike, all who are Buddha. Zen said: ‘it is wrong to speak, and it is wrong to desire.’ When words fail, we allow the vision to say what cannot be said by mouth. Perhaps this is the origin of ‘Ruxiang (Phases)’.


The story of the artist is one that has little to do with religion, but about the artist himself and the nirvana of his artworks. The works depict pain, yet are detached from the pain; bitterness, but beyond physical suffering— they are the exploitation and expression of one’s true self.

As a pure artist, his works can be clearly divided into two stages: realistic and freehand, respectively focuses on scene and emotion. Between the two stages, Zhiming had a serious illness. Having gone through the test of life and death, Zhiming completely abandoned all his artistic skills and techniques of realism, as well as the painting pattern he was used to. Instead, he started the pursuit of the truth in the chaos of nothingness. This required perseverance. To a certain extent, these works reproduce the artist’s experience of the moment between life and death. 


The exhibition ‘Ruxiang (Phases)’ illustrates artist’s anxiety and reflection on the issue of ‘emotion’, with the title of 108 heroes, the artist clearly has something to say: ‘In pain I learnt that what is truly important in life: the longing and pursuit of the spiritual world is the essence of one’s being. I talk with myself through the paintings, and express my attitudes towards life. Essentially, all my paintings are related to my current surrounding, causing myself to subvert and return to my true self’

In the studio, I have seen hundreds of works related to face, which are the proof that the artist has been immersed in his works for all these years. I read the deep fear in those faces that are ready to be seen and shock whoever sees them. Behind the fear is the essence of life—the soul, which is not only generally visualized, but depicted as symbols of the entire human race, as well as the existence and demise of history, politics, culture and the society created by man.


With a strong and powerful artistic style, these works are full of tension and directly connect with each audience’s inner self and the exploration of personal values. Zheng Zhiming said that he always wanted to show the inner extreme psychological state of the characters in his paintings, creating a moment of stillness of these characters, the air, memory and time. Art not only regards spirituality as anecdotes, but also the only way to created concrete existence. It is full of sudden existence and stillness. After all, ‘Ruxiang (Phases)’ depicts the complex spiritual world of man. 


The artist visualizes fear, melancholy and loneliness, and displays the contradictions and pains of vision after abandoning the structure. With bold and unrestrained brushwork, calm and rich color, these works stimulate complex feelings: a mix of tension, anxiety, depression and sadness. The characters are not just symbols, but body, mind and chaotic senses in one. There are emotions that explore the limits of life. These are reflected within these shocking, resisting and helpless emotions with evidence of also sour and sorrowful shouts of the soul. This is an art experience that is so deeply touching physically and mentally that leave people at a loss for words.
