周周的绘画作品,对当下中国「景观社会」(居伊·德波)在形成进程中所深陷的集体失序与个体感知困境做出了回应。身处这个纷繁而庞杂的「景观」堆积的高峰期,人们的生活被视觉传播机制所 统治,情绪和思维被热点事件所支配。
艺术家选择传统中国画独有的缩微景观式的图像语言来构建画面,表现景观社会的表演性和人在其中的异化状态。画作中的人物角色被摆在极不舒适的环境中,姿态略带扭曲,像困兽,但他们普遍对自己的处境没有觉察。在其最具代表性的系列中,周周在二维的绘画中加入手工刺绣和立体面料的拼贴。她利用刺绣的肌理补充了画笔不能到达的触觉层面,创造出一种能够启动通感的视觉语言。绸缎和锈线的光泽给人华美绚丽的视觉联想,而裸露出的线头和大头针赋予了作品颓败感,表现出热闹非凡的景观之下暗流涌动的危机感。
周周将自己的工作比作导演。那些素材在她构建的舞台上,讲述着半虚构半真实的故事,亦真亦假待由观众自己分辨。
Zhou Zhou's paintings respond to the emergence of the “Spectacle Society”(Guy-Ernest Debord) in China with the issue of collective disorder and the predicament of individual perception. At the peak of the accumulation of enormous and disorderly spectacles, visual mass media dominates people’s lives while hot topics manipulate the prevailing way of thinking and reaction.
Zhou constructs the picture by using miniature landscape - a unique visual language in traditional Chinese painting, to present the performative nature of the spectacle society and the social alienation of people inside. Each character in her paintings is placed in a highly uncomfortable position, distorted like animals in captivity, yet unconscious of their current situation. In Zhou's most representative series, a three-dimensional textile collage is introduced with handmade embroidery and fabrics, which creates a sense of synaesthesia by evoking the tactile sensation that usual brushes could hardly achieve. The lustrous silk and embroidery threads bring a gorgeous imagination; meanwhile, the exposed stitch ends and pins on the canvas show a slight deterioration, which hints about the crisis beneath the lively scene.
Zhou describes her work to a director. All the materials narrate semi-fictional stories on the stage she builds up, and the authenticity is all up to the audience to verify. Zhou’s work has been collected by many significant collectors from Shanghai and Taiwan.
About the Curator
Young Ran (b.1987, Chengdu, China), artist, writer. Visiting scholar, School of Philosophy, Fudan University, Associate Professor of Art Theory, Sichuan Conservatory of Music.Using art as a method to focus on the relationship between individual feeling and subjective rationalityin social ethics, exploring new methods of life. Through physical, behavioral, and visual event participation, she explores new ways of life communication.

As the first gallery in Shanghai to provide international artist residency, Studio Gallery was established in early 2016. Since then, we have continued to support the wide-ranging potential of emerging and new talents, complemented by innovative activities to nourish and enrich the local artistic environment.
The gallery operates two physical spaces. The gallery space locates in the heart of downtown Shanghai, continuously organizing topical exhibitions. While the studio space serves as the academic engine of the gallery space to explore and transform the value generated from artists’ practice into consensus.
With a bold and cutting-edge designed gallery space, we aim to create an inspirational dialogue with the audience through diverse public programs, including topical exhibitions, Artist Talk, Critique Room, etc.
