BROWNIE Project 荣幸与 Afternoon Projects 联合呈现群展“激悦和隐蔽的私密地带”。展览邀请观众审视已知和未知、理解和记忆的局限以及感受已知和未知的认知距离。展出作品陈列于画廊两层空间的明屋与暗房,展览空间变身为悬而未决的谜题,引申出地上生活和地下暗室之间的暗喻。这些半隐藏的线索和痕迹、激悦和隐蔽的隐蔽性,正是我们存在的诗意。


展览呈现艺术家周心语的最新作品,我们很荣幸地邀请到周心语进行对谈。


展览持续至2023年12月31日。


BROWNIE Project is thrilled to present “The Secret Realm of Thrills and Concealment” in collaboration with Afternoon Projects. It invites viewers to examine the awareness of the unknown but not seen, our own limits of understanding, the limits of our memory, the distance between knowing and not knowing. The artworks are installed on both levels of the gallery, in rooms bright and dark. The space itself becomes a half-solved riddle, echoing life above ground and the dark chambers below. Through these half-ridden clues and traces, one discovers the secretiveness of thrills and concealment, is the poetry of our existence.


This exhibition presents artist Zhou Xinyu's latest works. We are honoured to invite her to have a conversation.

BROWNIE Project:  Hello周,今年真的辛苦啦,在伦敦Union Pacific、上海BROWNIE Project 和香港 THE SHOPHOUSE 参加了4场展览,还参加了西岸艺博会,感觉怎么样?有什么让你印象深刻的事情可以跟我们分享下么?


周心语:虽然有些忙碌但平稳进行,这一年的创作在瓶颈与豁然开朗之间来回逃窜。印象深刻的是在刚开始筹备Union Pacific的群展的时候还处在疫情年代,不能够自由地穿越城市之间,在展览开启前不久国内彻底地解除了隔离,我也在随后三月香港Basel见到了Union Pacific的大家。深深感到这个展览恰好见证了在那个时间节点我与我周围的一切状态。



BROWNIE Project: Hello Zhou, what a busy year! You've had 4 exhibitions this year: with Union Pacific in London, BROWNIE Project in Shanghai, and THE SHOPHOUSE in Hong Kong, you've also participed in West Bund Art and Design Fair. How does it feel? Anthing impressive you'd like to share with us? 


Zhou Xinyu: Although a bit busy, it proceeded smoothly. My creation this year was oscillating between frustration and enlightment. What impressed me was that the preparation for the group exhibition at Union Pacific was during the pandemic and I could not travel freely between cities. But shortly after the exhibiton opened, quarantine was completely lifted.  I met Union Pacific at Art Basel in Hong Kong this March. I deeply feel that this exhibition happened to witness my situation and everything around me at that time.

THE SHOPHOUSE 周心语个展"昨日乍现"展览现场

BROWNIE Project: 在BROWNIE Project 这次群展中一共展出了2件作品,西岸艺博会也带去了1件作品,都是近两年的新作,可以聊聊这两年创作中的变化么?有什么是你想要坚持的?有什么是你接下来想探索的?


周心语:《蓝色嘴唇》会更早一些,那时我还以身边的亲密的女性朋友为原型创作,但我始终更关注肖像的氛围感,我会去掉人物肖像本身的特征让这张肖像画不成为某个人的肖像画。《滴、滴、滴》《把头发染成蓝色》这两件作品都是今年的创作,近年我的作品我都在处于一个更让“我”本身隐去的状态,如果把2023年之前的创作比喻成小说,之前的作品更像由第一人称书写,之后的作品更像以第三人称的口吻书写。我想要把我作品里一些疏离冷凝的气质延续下去,同时保持对材料的好奇,永远以实验的态度进行绘画,远离手头的熟稔。未来我想要在进行新的架上绘画创作的同时,开始实验动画短片的前期准备,在动画系毕业后我很神奇地恢复了对实验动画的热情。



BROWNIE Project: Two works are included in the group show "The Secret Realm of Thrills and Concealment" here at BROWNIE Project and we also brought another one to West Bund Art and Design Fair. They are all created in the past two years. Could you please talk about the changes in your artistic practice? What are those you'd like to hold on to? Anything you'd like to explore next?


Zhou Xinyu: Blue Lips was created more earlier, when I was using my close girl friends as prototypes. But I always pay more attention to the atmosphere of the portraits, removing traits of the sitter to make it less a portrait of a certain people. Drip, Drip, Drip and Dyed Hair Blue are both created this year. In recent years, my works tend to hide "I" myself. If we compare all works before 2023 to novels, earlier ones are writen in first person while the subsequents are more in the thrid person perspective. I'd like to continue the calm and detached qualities in my work, stay curious on materials, always paint with an experiment attitude, away from the beaten path.  In the future, I plan to maintain my pratice on painting while start preparion on creating short experimental animation. After graduated from the animation department, I miraculously regained the passion for experimental animation.

BROWNIE Project: 明年还会继续忙碌的节奏么?除了创作之外,有什么是你一直想做但还没做的事?


周心语: 我不会刻意调整自己的创作节奏,希望随时保持在旷野中游荡,在荒芜里寻觅的状态,在灵感充盈的时候忙碌,在灵感逃离的时候暂时游离。



BROWNIE Project: Will you continue a busy schedule next year? Besides creating, what are the things you've always wanted to do but haven't done yet?


Zhou Xinyu: I won't change my creative pace deliberately,  I like to stay wandering in the open, searching in the wild,  active when inspiration flourishes and temporarily idle when inspiration is absent.   

Apart from creating, there is actually nothing that can truly bring joy to my heart. Everything else, like beautiful scenery and delicacy, for me, they are brief pleasure similar to drinking coffee. Although the process of creation is often painful for the struggles and frustations, I indulge the momnet when I see the satisfying results. That moment is ravishing. So besides creating, most of what I do is just filling in the blank space beyond that moment.



BROWNIE Project: 回到展览题目《激悦和隐蔽的私密地带》,如果让你选一位艺术家和TA一起过一天,不考虑任何限制,你会选谁?为什么是TA?


周心语:我想要和二十六岁时的珂勒惠支一起度过一天。在阅读她的日记时发现我们个性上细微的一些相似,发现我们在考虑同样的问题,想要在我们相同年纪时一起轻松地度过一天,也许是在铜版实验室劳作一天后一起散步。



BROWNIE Project: Let's circle back to the title of this exhibition, "The Secret Realm of  Thrills and Concealment", if you had the chance to spend a day with one artist, regardless of possibilities, who will you pick? Why? 

Zhou Xinyu: I'd like to spend a day with the 26-year-old Käthe Kollwitz. I found that we share similiarities in personalities after reading her diary, we were thinking about same issues. I'd like to have a relaxing day with her when we're the same age, maybe taking a walk together after a day's hard work in the printmaking studio.

周心语的创作围绕着个人经验以及公共性的事件,但她并不将这些直接转译为画面,而是 从其中衍生的情绪生发出创作。她从失真的影像、光影碎片中汲取灵感,并且关注现实生 活的脆弱感以及转瞬即逝的诸多事物。她笔下的人物常浓郁地体现出与现实世界的疏离感, 停滞的情绪与冷静的凝视相交织,她将绘画作为一种向现实世界提问的手段。


周心语的创作技法受她少年时期数码绘画的直接影响,作为“95 后”一代,她在少年时期 更多地使用数位板在 Photoshop 中绘画,以及后来动画及版画的教育经历,使得“图层” (layer)对她影响颇深,因此她专注于利用多种绘画媒介层层叠加,以复现日常生活中的 具体时刻。这些具体的记忆被聚焦、定格,层层附着于平面之上,让原意变得更加难以捉 摸的同时,使画面中的材料纹理呈现出一种新的表述,将这转瞬即逝的回忆重新带回令人 失神的时刻。


女性人物肖像常是周心语的表现主题,这些肖像形象往往取自她身边最亲密的挚友(尤指 2021-2022 年的肖像作品),但她往往刻意地去除肖像本身形象特征,而去强调一种氛围 与情绪,她希望所呈现的肖像作品不是对某一个体的摹写,而是更具共性的“肖像”本身。

Zhou Xinyu's creations revolve around personal experiences and public events. However, she doesn't directly translate these experiences into imagery but instead draws from the emotions that arise from them. She draws inspiration from distorted images and fragments of light and shadow, focusing on the vulnerability of real life and the fleetingness of many things. The characters in her artwork often embody a sense of detachment from the real world, where stagnant emotions intertwine with a calm gaze. She sees painting as a way to pose questions to the real world.

Zhou Xinyu's creative technique is directly influenced by her digital painting experiences during her teenage years. As a member of the "post-95" generation, she frequently used digital tablets to paint in Photoshop during her youth. Her later experiences in animation and printmaking left a deep impression of the concept of "layers" on her. As a result, she focuses on layering various painting media to recreate specific moments from everyday life. These vivid memories are magnified, frozen, and layered upon the surface, making the original intent more elusive, while the material texture in the artwork presents a new narrative, bringing these fleeting memories back to a mesmerizing moment.

Female portraits are a common theme in Zhou Xinyu's work. These portraits are often derived from her closest friends (especially in the portraits from 2021-2022). However, she often intentionally removes distinctive features from the portraits, emphasizing atmosphere and emotion instead. She hopes that the portrayed images are not depictions of specific individuals but rather represent a more universal "portrait" itself.
