画画是一件简单的事情,只是一个从喜欢开始、到满意结束的过程。画画也是一件复杂的事情,需要在不断的否定中摸索道路,坚定前行。简单和复杂之间的区别是能否找到一种能够触摸到艺术本源的力量,这是我一直在探索的。

Painting can be a simple matter:it is no more than a process that begins with love and ends in fulfillment. Painting can also be something complex, it requires constant exploration on the path of negation while firmly moving forward. The difference between simplicity and complexity is whether a power can be discovered, that can touch the origin of art, which is what I’ve been exploring from the start.

绘画总是我生活的一部分。我从小在少年宫接受的绘画启蒙,上学期间受过的严格绘画训练,为我日后画画打下了基础。1991年我到了纽约,开始了留美十一年的生活,这段经历开拓了我的思维和视野,让我感受到了西方当代艺术文化的脉搏和精髓。穿梭于曼哈顿的东村、西村和布鲁克林,我结识了很多画家朋友——马可鲁、倪军、冯良鸿、韦佳、袁加等人,时至今日都是我的良师益友。2007年时,在纽约一起画画的几个朋友陆续回国发展。彼时我已在北京定居,全部精力都放在打理建筑事务所的工作上,他们善意地提醒我不应让忙碌的工作占据我的全部,需要给生活留下一些空隙,在自己的心灵中保留一块原生态的土壤和自由呼吸的空气,并鼓励我一定要继续坚持创作,呵护好这块“自留地”。

Art making has always been a part of my life. The instruction in drawing I received since childhood at the ‘Children’s Palace’ (a facility that provides extra-curricular activities for children including art education), and the rigorous training in painting I received during my school years, laid the foundation for my future painting. In 1991, I came to New York and started my 11-yearlong stay in the United States. Life in the United States broadened my thinking and horizon and allowed me to experience the pulse and essence of Western contemporary art and culture. Through frequent visits to Manhattan’s East Village, West Village and Brooklyn, I made the acquaintance of many other artists such as Ma Kelu, Ni Jun, Feng Lianghong, Wei Jia, Yuan Jia, etc., who remain my mentors and friends up to this day. In 2007, several friends who together had engaged in drawing and painting in New York, returned to China for their careers one after another. At that time, I had settled down in Beijing, with all my efforts devoted to running my architectural firm. My artist friends kindly reminded me, that however busy work was, it should not occupy all my life and that I should leave some time for other activities. They said that I should keep “a piece of pristine soil” and “air for breathing feely” and encouraged me to continue my creative pursuits and to take good care of that “private plot”.

面对这几位已是中国著名当代前卫艺术家的至交,我并不自信这些建议在当时对我是否合适。虽然绘画在我生命中的多个节点起过极其重要的作用,甚至一度是我谋生的重要手段,但我从没有敢拿绘画当作一项职业来看待。因为我认为绘画创作是应该追随自己的内心与直觉,表达的是对自我的认知,而当时的我还无法做到这一点。那时的我,对每幅画作都充满敬畏,过于在意材料和表现技法,过于在意如何去呈现艺术思想和艺术语言,而意识不到这些其实并不是绘画的核心,因此就总画不出满意的作品。但我能清楚地感受到对绘画的冲动始终存在于我的血液中,在我的身体内涌动,等待一个恰当的时机,它们就会流淌出来。

In the presence of these famous Chinese contemporary avant-garde artists, who are my most intimate friends, I was not confident whether such suggestions were practical for me at the time. I never dared to dream to take up painting as a profession, even though it had played a pivotal role at certain points in my life and had even once been an important means for making a living. In my view, one should follow one’s own heart and intuition when painting and express self-knowledge. At that moment in my life, I did not feel that I was able to accomplish that. At that time, I was in awe of every painting, excessively concerned about materials and expressive techniques and about how to present artistic ideas and languages. I did not realize that these were not the essentials of painting, so I was not always able to paint satisfactory works. However, I can clearly feel that the urge to paint has always been in my blood, surging in my body, just waiting for the right moment to gush out.

随着儿子的出生,这个时机就自然地出现了,这是一种源于生命的冲动。初始时我只想用绘画为孩子留下一些记录,这个念头促使我拿起了画笔,用对鲜活生命本能的热爱,去留下这份可贵的痕迹。同时,我则有机会低下身来用孩子的视角去重新观察,并顺着孩子的思维去重新认识和理解这个世界。这是一种对事物本能的探索,朴素而真实。我很庆幸孩子让我找回了这种纯粹的“干净”和淳朴。

With the birth of my son, this moment came naturally. It was an impulse that stemmed from life itself. In the beginning, I just wanted to use painting to leave some mementos for my child. This idea prompted me to pick up the brush and use the instinctive love for a new life to leave a precious trace. Meanwhile, I had the chance to bend down to observe with fresh eyes from a child’s perspective, and to gain a new understanding of the world, from his thinking. This is an instinctive exploration of things, simple and true. I am so thankful that my child has allowed me to regain this authentic purity and simplicity.

“开始—颠覆—重新开始”成了创作的主题 ,每次的开始都是一次探索和尝试,每次颠覆都是对前面的肯定,而颠覆的结果又是一次崭新的开始,每件作品都产生了多种未知的可能性。我不再急于完成任何一幅画,而是在创作的过程中,耐下心来尝试不同的可能,等待意外效果的呈现。这个过程虽然漫长,我却充满自信,这自信促使我一直画下去。往往最终画作呈现出了如大地般厚重的效果,这并不是因为作品本身看上去有夸张的厚度,而是因为在它被创造的过程中,经历了太多次的自我否定,和不断地覆盖与归零,因此在我内心中的重量无法形容,绝不是能用我们现实空间中的密度单位衡量的。

“Start-challenge-restart” has become the theme of art creation. Each beginning is an exploration and an attempt, and each negation is an affirmation of the former, whereas the result of negation, is the start of a new beginning. Each work produces a variety of unknown possibilities. I am no longer in a hurry to complete a painting but will try different possibilities. I proceed patiently in the course of creation, waiting for the unexpected effects to appear. Although the process is long, I am full of confidence which motivated me to keep on painting. In most cases the final painting is characterized by layers and layers of paint that add up to a thick impasto, taking on the quality of soil. These multiple layers of paint were not planned but resulted from the creative process which involved much introspection and reflection, including doubts as well as being daring, and constantly starting from scratch. Hence this piece holds an important place in my heart. All the experiences I have had from this project are beyond description and can by no means be quantified with the instruments and units of measure with which we gauge things in the real world.

我的作品在创作时完全没有精准的设计,一切的创作都来自于偶然放纵,每一笔都是意外,是一种有修养的任性,是对未知世界的探索,是一种充满好奇心的尝试,是从封闭到开放,从心灵到画布的一种充满真诚的触摸。我不需要和任何人解释画面上的文字和图案代表着什么,观众将它想象成什么就是什么,想赋予它什么样的寓意,那它便是什么样的寓意。我没有思考这张画到底会不会成为一幅好的作品,但我知道这幅画是永远复制不了的,它承载着我太多的情感和故事,是我对艺术的本能和真诚。

My paintings doesn’t have any precisely formulated design. During the creative process all strokes came from an accidental indulgence. Every brushstroke was unexpected, a refined consciousness, an exploration of the unknown world, an attempt full of curiosity, and a sincere touch from introspection to openness and from the soul to the canvas. I don’t need to explain to anyone what the words and patterns on the painting represent, that they can be whatever the audience imagines them to be, and that they can endow them with whatever unspecified meanings they wish. I didn’t think about whether this painting would be a good work in the end, but I knew that this painting could never be copied, it carried too many feelings and stories of me, it had embedded in it my instinct and authentic love towards art.

我已经找到了驱使我自己绘画的动力:那是一种生命之流,始于直觉的冲动,其后是无穷无尽的绵延。生命的冲动和绵延源自法国思想家亨利·伯格森的哲学,他认为艺术家之所以能直觉到事物的本质,是因为“他们不单纯是为了行动而去知觉;他们是为知觉而知觉,不为任何目的而知觉,只为喜欢这样做而知觉。”这也是我内心的共鸣。

I’ve found the momentum that drives my own painting: it is a stream of life that begins with an intuitive impulse, followed by an endless stretch. The idea of the impulse and the endlessness of life, originated in the writings of the French philosopher Henri Bergson, who believed that the reason why artists can intuitively perceive the nature of things is because “they do not perceive simply for the sake of action; they perceive for the sake of perception rather than for any purpose, they do it for the pleasure of doing so.” That idea strongly resonates with me as well.

绘画对于我来说不仅仅是画画,而是一种生命的体验。每一次画布与皮肤摩擦时留下的触感,油彩在指尖上流过时留下的温度,都是我存在的佐证。其实我所有的作品,无论是在一幅画上去做一遍、两遍、三遍的覆盖,还是所有的不同时期的创作风格的变化,都是我在绘画道路上前行的组成部分。我一步步走下来,走过了许多曲折的路,但留下的每一个真实的印迹,都是具有力量和生命力的,而这个过程就是我的画作存在的意义。

From my point of view, painting is not merely painting but an experience of life. Every time paint from the canvas rubs against my skin or the oil paint flows through my fingertips, it is a testament to my existence. In fact, every one of my works, whether a painting is being covered over once, twice, or three times, or all the creative changes in the style that were made in the course of different time periods, are all an integral part of my progress on the path of painting. I have walked along the path step by step and through many twists and turns, but every imprint I left is full of strength and vitality, and this process gives meaning to the existence of my paintings.

我对每一幅没有界限的绘画都充满热爱,它们都是生命的绵延,是“永动不息的而又不知疲倦的生命冲动,它永不间歇地冲动变化着”。我可以看见,在绘画之路的前方,将有无数的岔路等着我,我将充满好奇地触碰那些路口,它们都将通向精彩的未来。

I have full and boundless love for every painting. They are all an extension of life and a “perpetual and indefatigable impulse of life going on and changing incessantly”. I can see that in the path ahead in painting, there will be countless forks awaiting me, and I will explore those intersections with curiosity, and they will all lead to a wonderful future.

1981年开始从事绘画,1991年赴美学习工作,2002年移居北京继续专注于建筑设计和艺术创作,在哈尔滨、大连、武汉等地主持设计了多项“城市记忆系列”建筑作品,从2016年开始参与研发物理数字孪生与建筑人工智能交互的前沿技术。“高情感”与“高技术”是姜涛先生贯穿始终的创作主旨,他一直在探索将“艺术”与“科技”在建筑场景中融合,并诞生出了独具特色的艺术作品。

He started painting from 1981 and went to the United States to study and work in 1991. He moved to Beijing in 2002 and continued to engage in architectural design and artistic creation. He has presided over the design of a number of "City Memory Series" architectural works in Harbin, Dalian, Wuhan and other places. Develop cutting-edge technology for interaction between physical digital twins and architectural artificial intelligence since 2016. "High emotion" and "high technology" are his creative themes throughout. He has been exploring the integration of "art" and "technology" in architectural scenes, and has produced unique works of art.
