Using mainly oil paint and coloured pencils as his medium, Bai Hongwei creates series that pay homage to classic flowers, birds, landscapes, etc. He is a conservative who prudently pursues classicism and visual pleasure. He carefully controls and adjusts the composition, colours, brushstrokes, light and dark relationships, and spatial levels of the picture, pursuing harmony and perfection of the visual whole.
The work on display, Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains, is one of the artist's rare large-scale works and is a contemporary visual representation of the ink on paper painting of the same name by Yuan dynasty painter Huang Gongwang. In 1350, Huang Gongwang painted the painting Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains for his junior fellow apprentice Zheng Chu. The painting depicts the beautiful scenery of the mountains and waters on both sides of the Fuchun River in the form of a long scroll. Peaks and rocks rise and fall with the trend, and clear springs cascade from the depths of mountain streams. Surrounded by mountains, thatched cottages and village houses are interspersed with fishing boats and small bridges, which can be described as people moving with the scenery and scenery moving with the people. This painting reflects the author's skillful technique of outlining, chafing, dabbing and dyeing, reaching the realm of pure fire, Wu Qizhen in the early Qing Dynasty respected as "the first painting of all time", also known as "the painting of the Lanting". After the completion of its creation, Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains changed owners several times, with its body and head in two parts. The first half of the scroll is "The Remaining Mountains", which is now collected in the Zhejiang Provincial Museum; the second half of the scroll is "The Wuyong Shi's Scroll", which is now collected in the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
In this work, artist Bai Hongwei revisits and creates this national treasure, which has been passed down through the ages, using the stippling method, showing his homage to Huang Gongwang and the visual and aesthetic habits of contemporary society.
