The paintings in this show reveal complex and dynamic compositions with narrative undertones. Making vibrant symbolic paintings, Hurzlmeier, Kasey and Pausova’s aesthetic affinities draw from both abstraction and figuration, and from various significant historical art movements like Modernism and Surrealism, as they strive to expand their painting practice. Rooted in personal narrative, they create bold and graphic paintings in which they seek to explore new ways of experiencing and imagining figures, body parts, animals, still life elements and architecture.

Hurzlmeier and Kasey have researched the human form and its structure extensively. They then deconstruct the figure and rebuild it, each using their individual set of creative rules and tools to realize their vision and concept. All three artists recreate bodies, body parts and objects in a more abstract way, using either geometric lines or a more fluid style. Hurzlmeier and Pausova’s paintings are characterised by their flat and two-dimensional appearance and are often small or medium sized unlike Kasey who is known for her rich, patterned and thick textured larger than life canvasses.

The formal vocabulary of Modernism and the philosophy behind it explored an often-contradictory relationship between subject, colour and form. During that period, artists started investigating the elements of bodies and structures they observed such as objects, figures, landscape or any other subject. The issues that Modernism addressed are still just as important and relevant today. Modernists explored and experimented with shapes, forms and colours and the relationship between them. The aim was not to directly reflect reality but to create artistic interpretations, forming new aesthetics and a visual language. One hundred years on, Hurzlmeier, Kasey and Pausova continue to explore the philosophical and visual themes their Modernist predecessors investigated.

Leonhard Hurzlmeier’s bright minimalist paintings feature provocative, ambiguous and humorous compositions in predominantly primary colours. His studio practice is characterised by the artist’s unique process that he has named ‘Geometric Abstract Figurative Painting’, which he developed over recent years using an innovative process. A pictorial humourist, Hurzlmeier is known for his abstract portraits and bright paintings that bear a resemblance to glossy advertising imagery and are executed with rare mathematical compositional discipline. Behind his seemingly light colourful paintings, he follows an altogether formal discipline in which his canvasses evolve in stages, based on his responses to the picture’s layers and progress. His creative process can sometimes drain him of all his strength as on occasion its almost unbearable for the artist to deal with the tension generated by his efforts to follow a strict process whilst deeply expressing his emotions on canvas. Across several recent series this painter and draughtsman has ensured that each individual figure is presented in a thoroughly distinctive and meticulously planned composition.

Jordan Kasey explores quiet and mysterious moments that engage with a broad spectrum of deep melancholic feelings. Her characteristically stone-like, colossal figures are painted in solitary scenes against rich backgrounds and textures that project a range of human situations and emotions like isolation, attachment, detachment and compromise. Kasey comes to figuration through her own artistic and personal evolution and development as she uses her favoured palette of red, blue and green to paint her larger than life figures set against interiors or exteriors like starry skies, fruits, oceans with an emphasis on architectural elements. Kasey’s paintings present harmonious compositions filled with poetic palettes and textures as she plays with colour, composition and scale to evoke a sense of otherworldliness. Kasey’s practice is deeply invested in playing with painting as a medium to broaden her visual language through experimentation with colour, light and space painted on oversized canvasses. Kasey articulates this experimentation through positioning her mysterious monumental characters in building planes of highly varied texture. Even though Kasey’s canvasses are very large and colourful, her gentle introvert personality is beautifully projected in her work through compositions that viewers can experience with quiet contemplative understated intimacy.

Veronika Pausova’s small scale paintings feature a precise visual vocabulary and often engage in a pictorial space that exists between reality and its perception. Pausova describes her approach as “mathematical surrealism” in which she shifts the meaning of her characters and motifs from one painting to the next seeking to capture feelings and situations. Pausova’s paintings bring together a rich tapestry of everyday elements as she carefully positions flowers, body parts, butterflies, utensils, clothing items and individually rendered water drops within fields of abstraction. Each object is rendered with a precise attention to detail contrasting with the artist’s experimental treatment of surfaces, processes that are sometimes referential but often enigmatic. Forms recur across Pausova’s paintings but operate as signs, symbols or words, their meaning altered with each new context and position.

Hurzlmeier, Kasey and Pausova’s painting styles are clearly diverse as each artist explores a range of stylistic approaches that expand the boundaries of their practice. Recent works by these artists are presented in dialogue with each other as they seek to explore their varied timeless and poetic visual language with bold lines, fluid brushstrokes and a distinctive palette. Whether gestural or structured, meticulously calculated or organic and intuitive, the show aims to draw parallels between their practices.
