德国画家、版画家和雕塑家乔治-巴塞利兹（Georg Baselitz）是战后艺术家的先驱，他摒弃抽象主义，转而追求可识别的主题，刻意采用原始的渲染风格和高调的色调，以传达直接的情感。巴塞利兹接受了被纳粹谴责的德国表现主义，将人物形象重新置于绘画的中心位置。
巴塞利兹曾就读于东柏林美术与艺术学院，1957 年因 "社会政治不成熟 "被开除。随后，他来到西柏林，就读于艺术学院，并于 1962 年完成了研究生学业。在此期间，他改姓巴塞利兹。从青年时代起，巴塞利茨就对德国表现主义艺术家使用民间艺术、儿童艺术和精神病患者艺术等 "原始 "素材的做法很感兴趣。为了从战后的流行艺术中独立出来，巴塞利茨和同为艺术家的欧根-舍内贝克（Eugen Sch?nebeck）写下了所谓的 "大流行宣言"（1960-62 年），以暴力和令人震惊的方式表达了在战后德国工作的挫败感。1963 年，巴塞利茨举办了他的首次个展，但随即引发了一场丑闻：画作《下水道的大夜》（Die gro?e Nacht im Eimer）（1962-63 年）描绘了一个手持超大生殖器的扭曲人物，因被指控淫秽而从展览中撤下，直到漫长的审判结束后才归还给巴塞利茨。1965 年，巴塞利兹转向 "英雄 "主题。Helden（英雄）》（1965-66 年）--又名《Neue Typen（新类型）》--以厚重的浮雕手法描绘了站立在自然风景中的人物。这些被战争蹂躏的人物凌乱不堪、支离破碎，让人联想到近代历史事件，从而引起观者的情感共鸣。
