Huang Lan's solo exhibition "Meteorite Park" has opened on SEPTEMBER 7th, 2024 at the O2art 798 space. The Exhibition will last until OCTOBER 15th, 2024. Welcome to visit the exhibition.

This exhibition presents 34 recent works of Tempera mixed material by HUANG Lan, created between 2018 and 2024, using the confines of a single frame as an anchoring device. Each piece revolves around the theme of "daily life," employing a third-person perspective to depict seemingly ordinary scenes. Yet, beneath the surface, these works subtly allude to underlying disorders yearning for dissolution. These works resist the emphasis on fleeting moments, instead opting to explore the nuances of divergent temporal and spatial realms. Even within the same series, ostensibly similar photographs diverge, eschewing chronological narratives in favor of fissured iterations of time and space, fractured by minute discrepancies. When reason and normality are banished from the realm of the real, the absurd permeates and possess the objects. The juxtaposition of these frames create rifts, offering viewers an illusory space, a time travel that loops around terminal points, culminating in a distant, deeply personal experience. Jean Baudrillard's poignant observation resonates: "Objects, by their very existence, perform an artificial and ironic function." Meticulously constructed from freeze-frames from films, these images transcend mere representation, amplifying an intrinsic consciousness where the brain becomes the cinematic screen. HUANG's selective appropriation of cinematic narratives imbues her works with an inherent auto-mouvement, allowing space to sculpt the volume of time. Simultaneously, the interwoven objects and figures present a liminal space, a threshold that once inhabited, palpable yet ineffable, brimming with disquiet and unease. HUANG's frenetic constructions across parallel temporal and spatial realms offer a kaleidoscopic vista, inviting viewers to explore the probable fissions and cross-references between images, an intercontextuality between creation and destruction. Her minute tempera paintings on delicate Kent paper surfaces, redolent of French poetic realism, bestows an intimacy upon these dramatic scenes. In her approach, HUANG wields a profound conviction, fabricating with calculated detachment, stripping emotions from her subjects as she oscillates between pragmatism and romanticism. This process gradually narrows the emotional thresholds of both objects and figures, endowing them with a haunting performativity—cold, pallid faces; vacant, expansive eyes; eerily still liquids—akin to the movies of Finnish auteur Aki Kaurism?ki, who restrains to avoid swamped sensationalism, instead subversively reorganizes cinematic sequences for a cyclical narrative pattern, granting audiences momentary respite—be it in ennui or wander—to reflect upon life's profound absences. The vintagecore scenery, substantially enveloping figures and objects in a performative aura, exudes loneliness, disgust, and disquiet. This displacement serves as a fertile ground, prodding viewers toward reminiscent patchworking and collaborative creation. With dexterous mischief and deliberate unappeal, HUANG stages cruel jests, or petite crucibles that select the most alert and action-oriented spectators. She beckons them into the night of the comet, where dualistic outcomes coexist, casting light upon the miscellany lurking within the ordinary. The resultant scenarios that transcend time and space enact randomized open endings.Through iterative weavings, HUANG mirrors truths while kindling tensions betweenfacsimiles and scenes, unbound by prescriptive rules or dictates. Her constructions exude ubiquitous, disturbingly detached treachery. In defying space-time, she dismantles the comfort of the taken-for-granted, metaphorizing a static but eternal violence. HUANG thereby establishes a viewing trajectory wherein private and public space-times correlate—a self-repeating combat game. Upon deciding to engage, viewers must linger, attentively decoding the myriad embedded details. As HUANG elucidates, "I dissect myself as an individual case to draw a psychological state that everyone has, and if it's precise enough, it's a disease that everyone has."
