Approaching 'style' as a subject of systematic investigation originates from Alois Riegl, who explored the social genesis and origins of style and ornaments in his book ‘Problems of Style,' positing that style is a sociological mode of expression, with its motifs narrated across various historical periods. ‘Head Sounds’ draws inspiration from the concepts of fugue and counterpoint, two common genres and techniques in music. Within the strongly anti-style creations of the artistic duo MSR FCJ in the exhibition, various linear “scribbles" enter a new context—in modulation or dissonance— with a clear yet ambiguous artistic volition. As Italo Calvino describes, a certain "lightness" stands in contrast to the dull and heavy world. The "lightness of extraction" leaps upwards, resembling a form of deconstruction of past "styles."
The emphasis on breaking away from established styles within contemporary art culture stems from Lettrism and the Situationist International—it is under the influence of these two movements that rebellion and street art became possible as potential new forces in art. MSR FCJ ’s works are more characterized by the alterations and traces brought about by comic and cartoon-like graffiti, while still evoking a sense of narrative—colour field-esque compositions, distorted cartoon figures and uninhibited lines stack and intertwine, rebellious, unstable, and limitless. After being re-created by the artists, these traces take on the textured quality of the sound they emphasize, akin to free jazz . Perhaps it's the way co-creation works that renders the imagery into a 'middle ground,' where traces of romance, horror, humor, and fantasy linger, emerging as harmony amidst chaos through the intricate interplay of repeated layering and nuanced color field synthesis.
The traces are the final visual remnants of the scribbles, where “Head Sounds” becomes a variation of free jazz. They are both symbols and images, representing those concrete descriptions which are temporarily erased after the image has been overtaken by sound. As Calvino demanded of his own writing: My working method has more often than not involved the subtraction of weight. I have tried to remove weight, sometimes from people, sometimes from heavenly bodies, sometimes from cities; above all I have tried to remove weight from the structure of stories and from language.
If we claim that traditional imagery originates from prehistoric consciousness, it is symbolic depiction manifested from observing objects. Experimental images, on the other hand, represent the intellectual power born from abandoning rules and illusions through critical thinking and cognitive processing. Today, we find ourselves once again embroiled in a ‘medieval’ struggle over survival and the environment, compelling us to concretize and materialize consciousness and the universe, transforming them into states that are graspable, imaginable, tangible, and fillable. Art should endeavor to address questions to challenge concerning human existence, and to perform these new experimental imageries through unorthodox forms of ‘making’. When art is broken down into fragmented units through varied experimental process and directions, styles become vectorized by the medium, leading to the emergence of an inverted void.
