在经过几轮惨烈的资本博弈之后,市面上仅存留下来美团、哈啰和青桔这三个品牌的共享单车。它们背靠不同的商业资本和支付平台,将其余的品牌清理出局之后便握手言和,和睦共存。品牌方依据各自品牌的色彩特征重新打造了三款识别度极高的单车投放于市场,形成了一道中国独有的街头风景。
刘展用幽默的方式打乱了三款单车原本的色彩标识,制作了5辆不隶属于任何一个品牌的共享单车。色彩作为品牌的基因在这里有了交融,像是在谈一场你中有我、我中有你的恋爱。同时,艺术家也取消了共享单车扫码-付费-解锁的功能,取而代之以艺术家个人的微信二维码,将骑车人“扫码解锁”这一惯性操作转换成“扫码加好友”的行为。2023年4月,艺术家将其投放于街头任其自由流动,尝试通过这个流动的载体在公共空间中展开更广泛的互动。
这几辆单车被投放出去之后,刘展不断收到来自陌生人微信加好友的请求,也经常能在小红书上看到网友讨论它们的留言,这些都被他收集并展示在墙面上。直到2024年7月5日,艺术家通过陌生网友提供的线索找回一辆单车,结束了它这一年的旅行。

After several rounds of grueling capital games, there are only three brands of bike-sharing left in the market, namely Meituan, Hello and Qingju. Backed by different commercial capital and payment platforms, they shook hands and coexisted harmoniously after clearing out the rest of the brands. The brands have recreated three highly recognizable bikes based on their respective color profiles, creating a unique street scene in China.
Liu Zhan disrupted the original color identity of the three bike brands in a humor manner, creating five bikes that are not affiliated with any one brand. The colors as the genes of the brands are intertwined here, as if they were in a love affair where you are in me and I am in you. At the same time, the artist has canceled the function of code-sweeping-paying-unlocking, and replaced it with the QR code of the artist's personal WeChat, which converts the cyclist's habitual operation of “code-sweeping-unlocking” into the behavior of “code-sweeping-adding-friends”. In April 2023, the artist put the bicycles on the street for public use, in an attempt to develop a wider interaction in public space through this mobile carrier.
After the bikes were released, Liu Zhan continued to receive friend requests from strangers on WeChat, and often saw messages from netizens discussing the bikes on Xiaohongshu, all of which he collected and displayed on the wall. On July 5, 2024, the artist retrieved a bicycle through a clue provided by a strange netizen and the bike end its’ travel.

“半透明”系列是Unmask小组最具代表性的作品。这些作品戏仿并颠覆了古典雕塑的形式,将人们通常理解中的凝重的、不透明的、具有人文主义诉求的古典雕塑,转化为轻盈的、半透明的、充满欲望与商品气息的现代产品形态。这些没有性别和文化属性的雕塑,准确地将加入到经济全球化的中国文化生产状态体现出来。这一系列充满视觉愉悦感的雕塑都带着造作的忧伤或者思考的表情,向人们展示一个没有内容但充满诱惑力的、半完成状态的躯体,这些躯体也指向艺术创作者自身及其文化背景。
Unmask小组诉求于作品的流水线化和商业化。作品问世后,其形式不断被各种中国商家和工厂盗用并售卖,一座座地出现在新兴地产和商业中心的广场上,似乎完成了作品最成功的转身。

The “Translucent” series is the most representative work of the Unmask. These works parody and subvert the form of classical sculpture, transforming what is commonly understood as heavy, opaque classical sculpture with humanist aspirations into light, translucent, modern products full of desire and commodity. These gender- and culture-neutral sculptures accurately represent the state of cultural production in China as it joins the globalized economy. This series of the visually pleasing sculptures, with their contrived expressions of sadness or contemplation, presents a contentless but seductive, half-finished body that points to the creators of the art and their cultural backgrounds.
The Unmask appeals to the streamlining and commercialization of the work. Since its release, the work series has been appropriated and sold by a variety of Chinese businesses and factories, and has appeared one by one in the plazas of emerging real estate and commercial centers, seemingly completing the work's most successful reincarnation.

刘展、UNMASK
Liu Zhan & UNMASK
1976年生于河南洛阳,2002年毕业于中央美术学院雕塑系。2002年组建UNMASK小组,现生活、工作于北京。
刘展于2012年独立出UNMASK小组之后,以个人面貌进行全新的艺术探索,创作出以研究为基础的一系列装置,包括录像、印刷品、现成物与雕塑。从“探索动物繁殖的奥秘”到“阳台”体现出他希望探寻的另一条创作路径—即更加注重现场—艺术家对项目实施现场的空间维度与历史维度的思考与利用。他在表述方式上的多样性和实验性,在空间内外渗透出的多义性思考,都在某种程度上拓展了人们体验的边界。
Born in 1976 in Luoyang, Henan, Liu Zhan graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) and established the art trio UNMASK in 2002. He lives and works in Beijing.
After leaving the artist trio UNMASK in 2012, Liu Zhan initiated a new artistic exploration as an independent artist, creating a series of installations based on his own research, which includes videos, prints, ready-mades, and sculptures. His exhibitions “The Mysteries of Animal Reproduction” and “Balcony” suggested that he attempted to pursue a new path of artistic creativity, that is, paying more attention to the scene. This way, the artist utilized and reflected on the spatial and historical dimensions of where his art projects were presented. The diversity and experimentality of his artistic expression, in addition to the internal and external multiplicity of the space, pushed the boundaries of the viewers’ experience to a degree.
