Paul Segers works as multi-disciplinary artist under the name Unlimited Dream Company. He creates video installations, sculptures, performances and drawings. His works are concerned with the human condition in a highly technological society, and our changing relationship to nature and to each other. The Scene Changes shows a selection of video-based works from recent years as well as some older pieces. Some videos are documented performance pieces, and others fall more in the category of short movies or fiction.Segers' s works in various media are connected through narrative: he views all his works as 'scenes' that belong to a larger (unwritten) narrative. This narrative approach is most obvious in the video works and video installations - especially in the two latest triptychs "The Pump Jack Gang / Firestarter / The Wound" from 2022, and "The Desert Here and the Desert Far Away" from 2024, which is having its premiere here at GAFA Art Museum. The video "A lot of Brutes have been Clipped Here" is older work from 2011. It is a performance documentation for the exhibition Messages from the Front (2011) at the Stedelijk Museum 's - Hertogenbosch. Kr?ken - which means "crow" in Norwegian was shot on the rough and rocky shoreline in the North of Norway during a family visit there. The landscapes that Segers uses in his works start to become more and more important. According to Segers, they are the actual protagonists in his work, while the human characters are more like antagonists in their relation to these landscapes. The last video installation "The Desert Here and the Desert Far Away" which has been realised this year, shows us different landscapes that all have undergone changes. The Arctic region of Svalbard or Spitsbergen has just experienced the warmest summer in decades, with ice and glaciers melting faster than ever, and the flooded woodlands in another video also indicate extreme weather conditions. The third landscape, a sand-mining company shows the way us humans work with the land and seems to be an artificial desert.Performance: To Get The News From Poems...The man that became an image will share a poemTo get the news from poems is difficultWhen we get lost in translation保罗·希格斯于1976年出生于荷兰埃因霍芬。 Paul Segers graduated as a sculptor from the Academy of Fine Art & Design St. Joost in 's-Hertogenbosch in 2000, and obtained his MFA from the Dutch Art Institute in 2005.His work includes sculpture and installations, video/film, performance and drawing.
