Beyond Binary: Body Matters in Daniel Crews-Chubb’s Painting Practice

伦敦艺术家丹尼尔·克鲁斯-丘博（Daniel Crews-Chubb）在龙美术馆西岸馆举办的全球首次美术馆个展中，通过借鉴古代文化以及现代艺术，试图引导我们重新审视“自我”与“他者”的认知，并思考人类的生存境况。他色彩鲜明、层次丰富的绘画作品打破了人类与非人类之间的界限，体现出身份的流动性以及万物间的紧密联系。

我们诚邀您参加克鲁斯-丘博与收藏家Vince Guo的对话，他们将深度探讨艺术家近期的创作以及对其艺术实践产生深远影响的历史人物。本次对谈将由活跃于上海和北京的独立策展人袁佳维主持。

In his first solo museum exhibition in China presented by the Long Museum West Bund, London-based artist Daniel Crews-Chubb invites us to reconsider our perceptions of self and other by drawing on ancient cultures and Modern art to reflect on the human condition. His vibrant, multi-layered paintings challenge the boundary between human and non-human, while embodying the fluidity of identity and the interconnectedness of all beings.

Join us for a conversation with Crews-Chubb and collector Vince Guo as they delve into the artist’s recent body of work and the historic figures—past and present—that have transformed his practice. The talk will be moderated by Evonne Jiawei Yuan, independent curator based in Shanghai and Beijing.

1984年出生于英国北安普顿，现居住在伦敦。克鲁斯-丘博毕业于伦敦切尔西艺术学院和伦敦特尔普斯艺术学校。他凭借创新、实验性的拼贴绘画而迅速获得国际认可，其作品挖掘了原生艺术、贫穷艺术和抽象表现主义的精髓，并对艺术史的原型和符号进行质疑。克鲁斯·丘博于2021年首次参与英国机构项目“游戏的后果”（The Consequences of Play），该展览由英格兰文化遗产委员会委托举办。2023年他在英国牛津的阿什莫林博物馆与艺术家弗洛拉·尤赫诺维奇（Flora Yukhnovich）举办双个展。他的作品享誉国际，被广泛纳入了公共和私人收藏，其中包括奥地利维也纳阿尔贝蒂娜博物馆、英国牛津阿什莫林博物馆、中国上海震旦艺术博物馆、中国上海 Cc 基金会、科罗拉多州丹佛艺术博物馆、美国佛罗里达州迈阿密 ICA、Longlati基金会、伦敦萨奇画廊、韩国首尔 Space K、纽约和棕榈滩的地堡艺术空间贝丝·鲁丁·德伍迪收藏以及以及纽约霍尔艺术基金会。 

London-based painter Daniel Crews-Chubb (b. 1984, Northampton, United Kingdom)  holds degrees from Chelsea College of Arts and Turps Art School, both in London. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Timothy Taylor, New York (2024, 2020); the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (2022); Timothy Taylor, London (2021); Choi and Lager Gallery, Seoul (2021); Roberts Project, Los Angeles (2018, 2021); Vigo Gallery, London (2016); and Galerist, Istanbul (2014), among others. Recent group exhibitions include Le Chateau – Centre d’Art Contemporain et du Patrimoine d’Aubenas, Aubenas, France (2024); Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, UK (2023); Something Happened, PowerLong Museum, Shanghai (2020); 45 at 45, La Louver, Los Angeles (2020); Telescope, curated by Nigel Cooke, Hastings Contemporary, United Kingdom (2019); Tree, Vigo Gallery, London (2018); and ICONOCLASTS: Art out of the Mainstream, Saatchi Gallery, London (2017). 常驻北京，拥有纯艺术与艺术商业方面的国际学历以及本土机构经验。在影像与架上收藏领域深耕。收藏主题重点关注身体、行为、怪诞剧情、自我身份认知等。2022年与杨佳霖（Aria Yang）共同创立the soil collection，期待通过游牧式策展与针对年轻艺术家的委任创作建立一个流动的、可被讨论的收藏计划。

Based in Beijing, Vince Guo holds international degrees in fine arts and art business, complemented by local institutional experience. Deeply engaged in the realms of video arts and painting collections, his collecting focus revolves around themes such as the body, performance, bizarre narratives, and self-identity cognition. In 2022, Vince Guo and Aria Yang co-founded "the soil collection," aiming to establish a fluid and discussable collection plan through nomadic curation and commissioned creations targeting emerging young artists.

来自上海的写作者与策展人。她本科毕业于复旦大学文物与博物馆学系，后就读于伦敦大学考陶德艺术学院，获艺术史硕士学位，以及建筑联盟学院，获历史与批判思维专业硕士学位。目前研究兴趣涉及当代艺术的建筑媒介、（后）现代空间观念、边界美学及地理政治学相关。近期策划群展包括“即席之美”（ASE基金会，上海，2023）、“流向诸土”（贝浩登x缇干，北京，2023）、“缠缠缠绕——卡罗尔·波维、胡晓媛、阿丽佳·柯维德”（Longlati基金会，上海，2023）等。今年初她重返北京，由她担当执行策展人的群展“共贯与多元：当代绘画艺术新样态”呈现于中国美术馆，并策划了第八届画廊周北京新势力单元主题群展“风的内侧”以及元美术馆秋季群展“是日蓝花”。

Evonne Jiawei Yuan is a writer and curator from Shanghai. She graduated from Fudan University with B.A. in Museology, The Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London with M.A. in History of Art, and the Architectural Association School of Architecture with M.A. in History & Critical Thinking. Current research interests include the architectural media in-and-of contemporary art, (post)modern spatial concepts, border aesthetics and its geopolitics.

Earlier this year, she returned to Beijing, where she served as Executive Curator of “One and All: New Artistic Styles of Contemporary Painting” at the National Art Museum of China, Curator of “The Inner Side of the Wind,” the Up&Coming Sector of Gallery Weekend Beijing 2024.

Recent curations include “A Blue-Flowering Day” (Yuan Art Museum, Beijing, 2024), “By Virtue of Situated Compromise” (ASE Foundation, Shanghai, 2023), “A Tie to All the Earth” (Perrotin in collaboration with teagan:, Beijing, 2023), “Entangled, Ensnared, Entwined – Carol Bove, Hu Xiaoyuan, Alicja Kwade” (Longlati Foundation, Shanghai, 2023), etc.
