Yan Bing: Apple Orchard
START MUSEUM presents the large-scale solo exhibition of artist Yan Bing titled "Apple Orchard" on November 5, 2024. This exhibition draws inspiration from an autobiographical novel written by the artist four years ago.
Over the course of more than a decade, Yan Bing has consistently explored still life as the focal point of his artistic practice. His works encompass a diverse array of subjects—from skins and potatoes to mushrooms and broken trees, his repeated depictions of still life allow him to transcend the objects themselves, constructing a monument to nature with an eternal quietness and showcasing a strong call to primal forces. His creative journey is notably deliberate and classical. Finally, in this exhibition, he has chosen the vivid and archetypal theme of "apples" as a challenge. Apples derived from the orchard cultivated in his childhood home. To him, apples embody a unique blend of the regular and the vibrant, the contemporary and the classical, resonating with anyone familiar with the basic painting training. Additionally, apples carry complex and multifaceted meanings within the context of human cultural history. "Apples" are undoubtedly the most intricate, challenging, and necessary exploration in Yan Bing's artistic career.
In this exhibition, START MUSEUM will present nearly 30 new works by Yan Bing related to "apples".
Yan Bing, Apple (Brith), Oil on canvas, 180x460cm, 2024
Many years ago, in the mountain bay to the northeast of the village where I was born, there was an apple orchard with a terrain as labyrinthine as a maze. When I was very young, the apple trees there had already grown old. Later, people from the western part of the village found a more ideal slope near the southern riverbank and replanted trees, establishing a new apple orchard. This orchard accompanied me throughout my childhood and adolescence.

The artist's studio in Beijing
Yan Bing was born in 1980 in Tianshui, Gansu Province, China and graduated from Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2007, 3rd Studio of the Oil Painting Department. He lives and works in Beijing. Yan Bing directly uses ordinary or even primitive everyday objects as materials in his creation of different medium, and probes their spiritual dimension through painting. Hidden behind the prosaic items of daily life he depicts is his own perception of life. The emotions revealed in Yan Bing's works are complex, while the simplicity is permeated with his sentiment and speculation, pain and joy. These works exuding an ancient quality reflects the artist’s profound thinking about the relationship between his personal experience and the current living world.
