It's more than a “Pet Show”.

In December, Fotografiska Shanghai invite all the animal lovers to step into an art world full of fun, love, and warmth. Join us for The Pet Show, a heartfelt tribute to those affectionate faithful companions in life.

Featuring works by 24 artists who use their unique perspectives to portray pets in different ways, delicately outlined the emotional bond between pets and human. The exhibition explores how humans often place animals on a pedestal and consider them from all perspectives: as life partners, status symbols, friends and family members, and as works of art. Pets, once marginalized, have increasingly become an indispensable part of humans' self-integrity and an integral role in contemporary society and pop culture. This exhibition is a heartfelt tribute to those silent but affectionate faithful companions in life.

"The whole thing started with the dogs. I wanted to create a definitive set of pho-tographs representing the notion of similarities between humans and their pets. I'd seen this idea touched upon many times, but never in a substantial way. For a series of photographs to have universal appeal, it must transcend language. The photographs were designed to be understood instantly, by anyone, anywhere in the world. I love this idea of universality. A smile is a smile whether it is done in English, French, Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, etc. The same seems to be true of an Afghan Hound who looks like a handsome guy with long hair. Or a Bichon Frise? that looks like an old lady."

From a young age Gerrard Gethings was fascinated by birds, insects, and animals. In 2008 Gethings brought home a seven-week-old border terrier puppy called Baxter and he found the photographic subjects that were to be his muse. Animals.

Double Pomeranian, from series Best in Show, 2012?Dolly Faibyshev

Dolly Faibyshev is an artist with love for color, composition, and the human condition. In this series Best in Show we see photographs of overly groomed animalsat the Westminster Dog Show.

Dolly Faibyshev started photographing dog shows for her own enjoyment after first seeing them on TV, and they called out to her as a unique world to experience as an outsider. Over the years it became something she kept coming back to. The range of emotions at a dog show is palpable - from anxiety and tension before the competition to elation and sadness coexisting at the end of it all. The anticipation, the crowds, the emotions, colors and sounds - these things exist in abun-dance and are a joy to capture.

Mia, from series Wet Dog, 2013-2014 ? Sophie Gamand

"I photograph dogs to better understand humans."

Dogs are the first and most striking example of artificial selection. Acting like gods, we subdued an entire species. We created dogs and manipulated their genetics to fulfill our own needs and desires. I mostly work with shelter dogs, whose lives have been shattered because of humans’ shortcomings. They live in a state of limbo. Their stories and their fateallow me to explore the complex dynamics governing the relationship between our two species. Through the good and bad, the way we treat dogs speaks volume about our humanity.

For my series Wet Dog, I worked with professional groomers, and photographed their clients at their most vulnerable: bath time. Bath time is a "necessary evil' for urban dogs. Exposing these dogs when they are at the completemercy of humans, enabled me to capture their wide range of expressions. Poignant looks, despair, anger and even judgment can be read into their eyes. Overthousands of years, dogs have learned spectacular ways to communicate emo-tions to humans - but have we made the same effort to understand and commu-nicate efficiently with them? The Wet Dogs mirror our own solitude.

Amelia and My Hannah, from series Amelia Lore, 2018 ? Robin Schwartz

"The Amelia and the Animals photographs are drawn from actual journeys undertaken with my daughter in the interspecies world that we inhabited over a nineteen-year period. My daughter and I share affinity with the animal kingdom that unites us as we create photographs that tangibly access our dreams and help discover extraordinary experiences. We explore a world where the line between human and animal overlaps or is blurred, where animals are a part of our world and humans are a part of theirs. I am driven to depict our relationships with animals in the hope that these moments portray the sameness of humans and animals. Amelia has an enormous fortitude and ingenuity in her ability to relate to each individual animal with kindness and respect. My daughter is more than a pretty muse. Amelia is smart, tough, and brave enough to calmly cajole animals to relate with her. In retrospect, this series represents the most significant era of my life as it became a lifeline to my child." - Robin Schwartz, mother to Amelia Paul.

Unnamed (Eastern Box Turtles), from the series Housebroken, 2015?Areca Roe

“I work in many media, primarily photography as well as video, sculpture, and installation. My art practice engages with our culture’s relationship with the natural world. This relationship is a complex one - we require and revere it, but we simultaneously destroy it. I am specifically interested in the relationship between humans and animals - in a myriad of ways, we try to create connections between animals and ourselves.

In this series, Housebroken, I photographed unusual pets in their domestic environments. The pets are fascinating animals, to be sure, but their relationship with the owners has an element of ambiguity - it is not as clear and established as the companionship and comfort offered by dogs and cats. I explore the elements of these relationships, and the tensions that occur between the apparent wildness of the creature and its tame, domestic surroundings of soft textures and clutter. Conversely, some of the animals almost blend into their domestic surroundings, as if their camouflage has adapted to the new environment. I collaborated with the owners in choosing the photo locations, backgrounds, and scenarios within the home.” - Areca Roe

From the series: Dogs and Girls, 2011/2012??Hellen van Meene

Through over 100 pieces of works in 6 different themed sections, the exhibition will allow the audience to re-examine the important role of pets in our lives while experiencing the artworks up close. Pets, as an indispensable part of many people's lives, accompany us through many important moments in unique ways. This exhibition is not just an artistic feast but also a discussion on the status and impact of pets in human culture. In the meanwhile, Fotografiska aims to foster greater awareness and advocacy for the care and protection of pets through the exhibition.
