20世纪30年代初期，正值中华民族内忧外患的危难时刻，经由鲁迅先生的大力倡导，以进步美术青年为主力的中国新兴木刻运动开始兴起。随着新锐画家的不断涌现，版画团体的竞相成立，木刻运动以燎原之势席卷全国。他们以描绘人民疾苦、民族危亡为己任，以宣传鼓励为宗旨，把艺术创作与劳苦大众联系起来，表现出强烈的忧患意识与爱国热情，号召和鼓舞人民投身到反抗侵略强暴的洪流中去，成为革命宣传的一大利器。

在新兴木刻运动的影响下，广东木刻艺术也如火如荼地发展壮大起来，大批美术青年如罗清桢、陈铁耕等人到上海等地求学深造，后将现代版画的火种带回原籍,他们凭着对艺术的热忱和民族存亡的忧患意识，以刀为笔，在黑暗中求索，参与了上世纪三十年代中国新兴木刻运动的拓荒者的行列。

本次陈列展涵盖了李桦、黄新波、古元、彦涵、力群、胡一川、江丰、王琦、陈烟桥、罗清桢等艺术家创作于上世纪30年代至新中国成立这一新兴版画发展最为蓬勃时期的代表作品，无论是从社会作用的角度看，还是从版画艺术家艺术发展的角度来看，这一时期的版画，都是中国现代版画发展史上较为重要的阶段，任何一个画种在当时都难以像版画一样，以如此强烈的艺术感染力震撼人的心灵。通过这一展览，冀望观众能真正体味那段承载着艺术家理想与使命的峥嵘岁月，感受以中国版画为代表的艺术所表现出的感召力与深远影响，以及艺术家们强烈的社会责任感与民族解放的使命感，并以此推动当代版画艺术的新发展。

In the early1930s, when the Chinese nation was in the middle of internal and externalcrises, the new woodcut movement began to emerge under the strong advocacy ofMr. Lu Xun, and with progressive young artists as its main force. With thecontinuous emergence of new painters and the establishment of printmakinggroups, the new-styled woodcut movement swept across the country. Called by themission of salvation and resistance to invasion, artists bravely threwthemselves into the torrent of war, recording the glorious history withwoodblocks and carving knives. Under the influence of the new-styled woodcutmovement, woodcut art developed in full swing in Guangdong, becoming adistinctive popular art. Furthermore, a number of trailblazers and pioneers ofthe new art emerged. With a strong sense of national responsibility and anexcellent vision of fine art, they added a colorful touch to the revolutionaryart of Guangdong.
