Clavin, Cone of Shame,2017 ? Winnie Au

“To reflect the importance accorded pets in the contemporary family, I portray them in the same way that I capture humans. At the same time, by elevating their portraits, I am honoring the love and devotion animals give to their human companions. Through my Cone of Shame series, I transform the pet dog’s post-surgery humiliation into something beautiful and majestic - making the collars and the dogs within them works of art.”
Winnie Au’s fine art photography portrays the exalted role pets play in our lives. Winnie currently lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her basset hound Clementine.

Kári Bj?rn

Untitled works from the series Pooches, 2016-2020 ? Ka?ri Bjo?rn

Kári Bj?rn is an Icelandic photographer, currently based in the United States. Bj?rn is inspired by his naive childhood conception of “America the great!” In parallel, he is intrigued by its most blatant flaws and societal topics.
Pooches follows a circuit of animal fashion shows and tournaments in and around New York City, with the grand finale, The New York Pet Fashion Show, held annually at Hotel Pennsylvania’s penthouse ballroom. The show itself brings together the chaos and glamour of New York’s fashion Week mixed with the grace and elegance of the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, which occur simultaneously in February.

Wang Hanlin

Dog with Glasses and Tie, from series Animal Capital, 2020 ? Wang Hanlin
In the face of the complex new changes in the world, pets, as common friends of humans, have seen alterations in their living conditions due to various factors. This phenomenon also reflects the accumulated historical issues within human society. This series of works attempts to explore the intricate and symbiotic relationship between humans and animals in the new era, through observation of pets and the development of its related industries as a starting point.
Since man domesticated wolves into dogs, a new role has gradually emerged in human social structure: pets. Animals have been domesticated as human production tools or source of food, and gradually became human appendages inthe process of history. Modern day urban life differenciates people and pets from the traditional relationship, and the functionality of domesticated pets is becoming ever more blurred, and the relationship between people and pets is also undergoing new changes. Marx once stressed that the study of the relationship between things should start from its essence, through "pets" as a starting point, we can better understand the social structure of human beings. Pets have become a social structure that cannot be ignored. Pet behavior and human behavior interact and influence each other. Through the expression of the intimate relationship between people and "pets", this exhibition intentds to portray modern day family structure and consumption patterns, and ultimately converge a reflection of ourselves through our “pets”.

Antoine Schneck

Their Dog, 2009 ? Antoine Schneck

Back in 2009, the Director of Paris’s Museum of Hunting and Nature commissioned Schneck to produce a series of photographs of 60 dogs whose owners were famous French people. A gallery of portraits featuring these stern dog photographs was created in the museum, in an anthropomorphic parody of the portraits of famous ancestries that can sometimes be found in European castles. This exhibition mesmerized art critics and the public and was hugely successful. For shooting sessions, dogs had to don black scarves, an accessory which perhaps facilitated their holding hieratic stance in front of the camera. Responding to Schneck’s talents at whispering to their ears, all dogs in the series behaved like professional models, whether owned by real noble men, fashion icons or French pre?sident.

My work has been featured in the New York Times and has had several photo exhibitions in Japan.”

"Until one has loved an animal a part of one's soul remains unawakened." - Anatole France
More than 14,000 years ago, pets has been a companion to humans. They are not only members of the family but also solace for our souls. They teach us empathy, help us learn to express love and take responsibility, and provide us with warm companionship in times of loneliness.
This exhibition is not just an artistic feast but also a discussion on the status and impact of pets in human culture.
