Schein Space is pleased to announce the upcoming solo exhibition Zeyi LI: My Favorite Rock Star, opening on January 4, 2025. Centered around the eponymous video work, the project stages an emotional displacement of digital laborers, presenting the intertwined lives of a short drama actor and a ride-hailing driver. Through their work and daily routines, aspirations and dreams, struggles and escapes, the artist explores the complexities of contemporary existence. Narrated in the first person, the protagonist seeks repeatedly to establish a connection with the audience, evoking a profound resonance of shared emotions.
During the creation process, the artist conducted extensive field research in Hengdian, Shanghai, and Hangzhou, interviewing industry practitioners and observing their work and living conditions. This investigative approach aims to unravel the intricate employment structures shaped by digital capitalism. In the work’s final moments, the artist raises an inescapable question faced by individuals in contemporary society: as laborers, participants, and audiences within the digital capitalist system, can we ever escape the fate of becoming part of the “multitude”?

Zeyi LI lives in Beijing. He received his MFA from School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2017. His recent practices focus on the metaphysics of power and the dislocation of the‘other’in the narrative of the subject. He constructs the fields of intensities through multiple media such as video, installation, painting, and photograph by which to the amplify the senses and to display the absurdity of the system that cannot be crossed and compensated by the individual, and to further explore the possibility of creating a new life for human beings.
