Enjoyable Journey After Passing Great Hurdles in Life:   

Special Exhibition on the 105th Anniversary of the Birth of Song Wenzhi

一个从育婴堂抱养的孩子，通过自身的努力，不断翻越重山，成为优秀的青年教师、江苏省国画院秘书、副画师……一步步成长为著名的国画大师。宋文治先生秉持的人生信念，正如他的代表作题名——“轻舟已过万重山”。习近平总书记曾说：“深圳是中国特色社会主义在一张白纸上的精彩演绎”，宋文治先生从螟蛉之子到大艺术家的人生逆袭又何尝不是如此。

Adopted from an orphanage, Song Wenzhi overcame significant challenges through sheer determination and hard work, establishing himself as an exceptional young teacher at an early age. He served as the secretary and associate painter at the Jiangsu Traditional Chinese Painting Institute and eventually became a celebrated master of Chinese painting. His life philosophy is beautifully encapsulated in the title of a number of his most representative works, "The Boat Has Left Ten Thousand Mountains Far Away," which implies one can eventually have an enjoyable journey after passing great hurdles in life.General Secretary Xi Jinping once remarked, “Shenzhen stands as a symbol of what socialism with Chinese characteristics can accomplish.” Song’s life storties from an abandoned baby to a great master is a testament to this idea.

适逢宋文治先生诞辰105周年，深圳美术馆举办“美术菁英在深圳”系列展之“轻舟已过万重山——宋文治先生诞辰105周年深圳特展”。本次展览展出80余件宋文治先生在各个时期的代表作，还有创作手稿、往来信札等，并特别设置了“与深圳同舟行”篇章。这个展览不仅是对宋文治先生艺术成就的展示，呈现他不同时期的精品力作，讲述他与深圳的特殊情缘，更重要的是从观众的角度出发，通过艺术感召，链接宋文治先生的个人品质与深圳的城市精神，引领个体冲破阻碍、翻越人生的万重山。

In celebration of the 105th anniversary of Song Wenzhi’s birth, the Shenzhen Art Museum holds the “Enjoyable Journey After Passing Great Hurdles in Life”.This exhibition displays more than 80 pieces of Mr. Song Wenzhi's masterpieces at various stages of his life, as well as creative manuscripts, correspondence, etc., and specially set up a chapter of “Joint Effortsin Shenzhen”.This special exhibition not only showcases Song Wenzhi’s artistic achievements and representative works in different periods but also highlights his unique connection with the city. More importantly, it links Song’s personality with the urban spirit of Shenzhen through the power of art, inspiring visitors to overcome obstacles and surmount challenges in life.

20世纪90年代的宋文治

宋文治 1919 年 10 月 28 日生于江苏省太仓县城厢镇。苏州美术专科学校毕业。曾在太仓、安亭从事美术教育达16年。在这期间，他利用工作之余，学习研究中国山水画技法，又拜上海山水画名家张石园、吴湖帆先生为师，并得到当代著名画家陆俨少、朱屺瞻先生的指导，为传统山水画技法打下了坚实的基础。

1957年江苏省国画院筹备成立，宋文治先生调到画院，先后任院长秘书副画师等职。1977年任江苏省国画院副院长。曾任中国美术家协会理事，中国美协江苏分会副主席，江苏省政协常委，江苏省国际文化交流中心副理事长江苏省文史研究馆副馆长，江苏省文联委员，江苏省国画院一级美术师，南京大学教授，第四、五、六届全国文代会代表，享受国务院特殊津贴专家。

1999 年8月10日，宋文治先生因病在南京逝世，享年81岁。

Song Wenzhi was born on October 28, 1919, in Chengxiang Town, Taicang County, Jiangsu Province. He graduated from Soochow Meizhuan, a fine art school, and spent 16 years teaching art in Taicang and Anting, Shanghai. During this period, he devoted his spare time to mastering Chinese landscape painting techniques. He studied under renowned Shanghai landscape artists Zhang Shiyuan and Wu Hufan and received guidance from prominent contemporary painters Lu Yanshao and Zhu Qizhan, establishing a strong foundation in traditional landscape painting.

In 1957, as the Jiangsu Traditional Chinese Painting Institute was being founded, Mr. Song joined the institute, holding various roles such as secretary to the director and associate painter. In 1977, he had become the deputy director. Throughout his career, he served as a council member of the China Artists Association, vice chairman of its Jiangsu branch, a standing committee member of the Jiangsu Provincial Political Consultative Conference, vice chairman of the Jiangsu International Cultural Exchange Center, deputy director of the Jiangsu Provincial Institute for Culture and History, a member of the Jiangsu Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles, a senior artist at the Jiangsu Traditional Chinese Painting Institute, a professor at Nanjing University, and a representative at the 4th, 5th, and 6th National Literary and Art Congresses. He was recognized as an expert with special allowances from the State Council.

Mr. Song Wenzhi passed away on August 10, 1999, in Nanjing, at the age of 81.

宋文治浸润在江南的文化环境中，自小就展露出绘画天赋。青年宋文治以古为师，人物、花鸟、山水均有探索，并在苏州美专系统学习素描、水彩等西画技法，最终选定了山水画的创作方向，画艺渐入佳境。随着与朱屺瞻、张石园、陆俨少、吴湖帆等艺术大家的学习交往，结合实地写生，逐步走出了自己的艺术新路，开启了个人山水画创作新境界。

Immersed in the rich cultural atmosphere of Jiangnan (the southern bank of the Yangtze River) from a young age, Song Wenzhi displayed an early talent for painting. As a budding artist, he explored traditional Chinese painting, studying figures, birds, flowers, and landscapes. He also learned about Western techniques such as sketching and watercolor during his time at Soochow Meizhuan, a college for professional training in fine arts. Ultimately, he chose to focus on landscape painting, gradually refining his skills. Through interactions with renowned masters like Zhu Qizhan, Zhang Shiyuan, Lu Yanshao, and Wu Hufan, he carved out his unique artistic path based on extensive on-site sketching, opening new horizons in the realm of landscape painting.

新中国成立后，如何用传统笔墨表现新中国新河山成为当时艺术界最重要的课题。江苏省国画院所组织的“两万三千里”写生实践，成为应对山水画革新课题的成功例证。宋文治与傅抱石、钱松嵒等名家巨匠同行，“以现实主义发展浪漫主义”，将笔墨新意与山河新貌相融合，不断思考和寻找自己艺术的突破口，创作出以《广州造船厂》《山川巨变》《新安江上》等为代表的反映工农业建设和革命圣地的系列作品，在同时代、同题材的创作中脱颖而出。

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, how to depict the new landscapes of the nation with traditional techniques became a crucial focus for artists. The "23,000 Li" field study (sketch from nature) organized by the Jiangsu Traditional Chinese Painting Institute served as a successful example of innovation in landscape painting. Working alongside masters such as Fu Baoshi and Qian Songyan, Song Wenzhi embraced the approach of "developing romanticism through realism." He skillfully merged new ideas with the fresh landscapes of the era, constantly seeking breakthroughs in his work. This effort resulted in a series of standout creations, including"Guangzhou Shipyard,""Great Changes in Mountains and Rivers," and "On the Xin'anjiang River."These works distinguished themselves in the context of contemporary art by effectively reflecting themes of industrial and agricultural development and revolutionary landmarks.

江南太湖是宋文治艺术创作的永恒主题。从20世纪60年代开始，经过十多年的创作，已然有了独特的面貌。改革开放以后，宋文治怀揣着对描绘祖国大好河山的美好向往，转向对文人绘画创作情境的坚守。他善学思变，承古出新，在艺术创作上实现了“井喷”式爆发，江南、太湖、峡江、黄山这些传统题材在他的画笔下呈现出独属于宋文治的新意境——清新隽秀、诗画交融。

Since the 1960s, the Taihu Lake in Jiangnan has been an eternal theme in Song Wenzhi's art. In the following decade, he developed a distinctive style that became much more pronounced. After China's reform and opening-up, Song shifted his focus to preserving the essence of literati painting while also embracing innovation. His works on traditional subjects such as the Jiangnan, Taihu Lake, Gorges, and Mountain Huangshan showcase a new artistic vision characterized by freshness, elegance, and a seamless blend of poetry and painting.

20世纪80年代，宋文治在中西文化的交流中开阔了视野。他大胆吸收中西绘画精髓，将泼彩、泼墨以及西洋画的光影色彩技法与传统中国画的勾勒、皴擦巧妙地融于一体，开创作了全新的个人艺术风格——“小泼彩”，为中国山水画推陈出新提供了又一新的典范。

In the 1980s, Song Wenzhi broadened his artistic horizons in the exchange of Chinese and Western cultures. He boldly integrated the essences of both traditions, melding techniques such as Pocai (splash-color), Pomo (splash-ink), and Western chiaroscuro with traditional Chinese brushwork. This fusion led to the creation of a unique style known as "Xiao Pocai"(light splash-color), which set a new model for innovation in Chinese landscape painting.

面对八五艺术思潮以来否定中国画的言论，老年宋文治以自信的姿态回归传统，从博大的传统艺术中的发现新营养，启发新灵感，拓展新境界，可谓是老而出新，越老越新。

In the face of the '85 Movement that questioned the value of traditional Chinese painting, Song Wenzhi, in his later years, confidently turned back to traditional genres and stylesthat nurtured his icons. He found new nourishment and inspiration within the vast reservoir of traditional Chinese arts, which allowed him to expand the boundaries of his work into new realms. His journey demonstrates that innovation and creativity can continue to flourish with age, and they bring a fresh perspective and beauty to his art.

导赏文章节选

宋文治先生是恪守感恩和回报，一生用丹青翰墨赞美祖国、讴歌人民的典范。贫苦的出身、青少年时期的艰苦经历让他倍加感恩和珍惜新社会带来的新生活，从安亭师范的美术教师到江苏省国画院的专职画家，他都满怀着对党和人民的感激之情。他一直对别人说，他之所以能有这样的生活和艺术成就，离不开国家和人民对他的培养和信任。只要国家有需要，他总是义不容辞，这种深情一直贯穿其毕生的创作之中。

据笔者目力所及，他的书画作品绝大多数是现实题材创作，赞美祖国大好河山，讴歌时代精神，如《山川巨变》《春风又绿江南岸》《轻舟已过万重山》等代表作。青年、中年、老年时期的作品，不论艺术风格怎么变化，都饱含了他对祖国和新生活的挚爱之情。每件作品都精心构思、精心布局、精心绘制。他的绘画风格清新隽秀、春光明媚，令人赏心悦目。

他特别热爱生他养他的家乡太湖，江南太湖是他笔下创作的永恒主题。他笔下的家乡充满诗情画意，如梦如醉，独出前贤，素有“宋太湖”之美誉。宋老先生的这份热爱家乡的情怀，也是全球中华儿女“杏花春雨江南”家园情怀的深情表达。

Mr. Song Wenzhi exemplified gratitude and reciprocation, dedicating his life to praising the motherland and celebrating the people through his art. His humble beginnings and the hardships of his youth made him deeply appreciative of the new life brought by the new society. From being an art teacher at Anting Normal School in Shanghai to a full-time painter at the Jiangsu Traditional Chinese Painting Institute, he was always filled with gratitude towards the Party and the people. He often remarked that his life and artistic achievements were inseparable from the support and trust of the country and its people. Whenever the nation needed him, he was always ready to contribute, a sentiment that permeated his lifelong creations.

As far as I can see, Mr. Song’s artworks predominantly feature realistic themes, celebrating the beauty of the country and the spirit of the times, as seen in masterpieces like "Great Changes in Mountains and Rivers," "Spring Breeze Greening the Southern Shore," and "The Skiff Had Left Behind Ten Thousand Ranges of Hills." Regardless of the artistic style changes throughout his youth, middle age, and later years, his works consistently reflect his deep love for the motherland and the new life. Each piece is meticulously conceived, composed, and executed. His style is fresh and elegant, filled with the charm of spring, delighting viewers.

He had a special affection for his hometown by Taihu Lake, with Jiangnan's Taihu being an eternal theme in his creations. His depictions of his homeland are poetic and dreamlike, earning him the moniker "Song of Taihu Lake." This love for his hometown also expresses the deep-seated "Jiangnan" sentiment shared by Chinese people worldwide.
