We are surprised to find that, after spending two wonderful years at our Hefang Street location, Schein Space is moving once again. We are deeply grateful to all the friends who have supported and helped us along the way—whether you are from the art world, our next-door neighbors, or simply passersby. Your intentional or casual suggestions have inspired us and given us much to reflect on. We hope that in our new space, we can continue to adapt to our surroundings, stay committed, and foster a spirit of unity and friendship.

Schein Space is a transitional space converted from the street stores. It cooperates with artists according to local conditions and integrates “infinite" exhibitions into street stores that can be viewed 24 hours a day. We chose a spatial location where non-designated people can watch, returning to the streets and the crowd, the art communication in a method of subconscious is revived. We believe that the attitude of the artist and the interactive relationship between the artist and the viewer are more worthy of understanding and dissemination - "the unconscious operates as a still unknown force”.

It is a constraint but also a freedom.

Currently, Schein Space consists of five contents: “ Is an exhibition " (a column for artists' personal projects/exhibitions) where Schein Space will cooperate with artists according to local conditions and the "infinite" exhibitions are integrated into the shops along the street that can be viewed 24 hours a day), “ Is friendship " ( a column for finding friends, sharing events/projects/exhibitions around the world from time to time, and getting to know them, becoming friends, and encouraging and supporting each other !), "Is a dialogue" (a column in which Schein Space and artists use the exhibition as a clue to have a conversation with each other during the exhibition period), “ Is an event" (Spontaneous, temporary, and responsive activities initiated by Schein Space), “ Is OSWAR" (A residency program launched by Schein Space, encouraging and supporting artists to create, exchange, participate, and present their work in a way that is confrontational, uncertain, transparent, contradictory, sincere, and collaborative. Rooted in Hangzhou, this program aspires to enrich the city’s artistic ecosystem.).

Originally, Schein Space was located on Wulin Road, a well-known area in Hangzhou lined with various shops. However, with the rise of e-commerce and the impact of COVID-19, what was once a bustling fashion street gradually declined, leaving behind daily goods stores and an ever-changing mix of trendy influencer shops. With curiosity and a sense of the unknown, we embarked on our journey at the Wulin Road space. For the exhibition"大河:糖醋里脊的制造者亦是糖醋里脊本身 ," we set up a "Cainiao Yizhan" and placed gray-toned delivery packages, which sparked a wide range of reactions and debates among visitors. This was the first time we truly experienced a "dialogue" with the audience. Through continuous projects, I also started to explore how the public perceives the existence of Schein Space. In contrast, the exhibition"Wang Jiajun: You Know Me Better Than That " featured a more tangible "dialogue" space—a guestbook. While the artist originally intended for visitors to leave thoughts on the exhibition, something unexpectedly moving happened: instead of discussing the artworks, visitors used the guestbook as a "confessional" to express their innermost thoughts. Some even returned multiple times to check if a stranger had responded to their messages. At Wulin Road, what we gained most was the presence of everyday life and the emotions of visitors after their workday had ended.

When Schein Space was located on Hefang Street, we designed our projects in response to the surrounding geographical context. Situated just 100 meters from the Orioles Singing in the Willows of West Lake, the exhibition "Yang Hangping: The Weather of That Day" was conceived with the seasonal changes in mind. Using "weather" as a conceptual entry point, the exhibition invited visitors into a 15-square-meter "orange grove." Through curated clues related to cultivation, storage, and circulation, the project reimagined the often-overlooked weather stories embedded in the long history of citrus plants. It also explored the production memories of citrus within a value system driven by "usefulness." Resident artist Zhang Lehua also engaged in sensory interactions with others, drawing inspiration from the stories and memories that emerged during his time working and living in the space. He invited friends for a boat ride on West Lake—accidentally sketching, unintentionally becoming one with the lake. Using props left behind by previous exhibiting artists, he unknowingly merged them with his own works, and before realizing it, new artworks had taken shape.

At this stage, Schein Space is a transitional space, which is temporary, trivial, rapidly owned, and constantly flowing. It can also be said that it is nothing but also has everything. Our ideal space state is to maintain the nature of the space, continue to carry out it, continue to learn, to have more academic pursuits. We also wish to maintain the independence of space exhibitions in the future while giving the space more possibilities.
