Yuan Ye (1991, China) graduated from China Academy of Art and now lives in Shanghai.

Yuan Ye adopts the philosophy of Buddhism as the core of his creation, and his works explore the fundamental connotation of “sunyata” (emptiness, vacuity) and “impermanence” (transient, inconstant) through the form of visual art. His creations are deeply influenced by the idea of “sunyata” in the Diamond Sutra, which emphasizes letting go of “asamprajanya” (inattentiveness, non-alertness) and exploring the intertwining of the material and the spiritual with a casual attitude.

The word “immeasurable” not only refers to the transcendence of finite quantity and space-time, but also symbolizes the wisdom of “emptiness”, which is free from delusion and obsession. Yuan explores the idea of impermanence and infinity, i.e., neither artworks nor people can be limited to a particular form or fixed meaning. By no longer relying on the traditional form of calligraphy, but choosing the canvas as the carrier, Yuan allows the words to be overlapped and intertwined on the canvas, creating a sense of visual chaos that hints at the limitations of language and words, as well as the realization of the inner clarity that comes from transcending these limitations.

Yuan’s works are based on calligraphy, but break through the framework of traditional writing. Through the overlapping of words and the free combination of dots and lines, he forms a unique visual language, which is not only a deconstruction of the tradition, but also a contemporary extension of the concept of “calligraphy and painting homology”. His works are not limited to forms and materials, but through superposition, dissolution and transformation, he guides the viewer to surpass appearances and reach the inner reality and impermanence.

Yuan’s works present a contemporary visual expression of Buddhist concepts, inviting the viewer to perceive the meaning of existence and the true meaning of impermanence in a dual experience of vision and mind. Recent major exhibitions include: Powerlong Museum, Shanghai, China (2025), Lutra Gallery, Shanghai, China (2024), Huanglong Art Space, Hangzhou, China (2022), and Leza Art Space, Shanghai, China (2022).
