HOW Art Museum is pleased to announce that Rear Window & Real Wonder, the exhibitionon on the first floor of HOW Art Museum, will be on view from April 21, 2025. The exhibition co-curated by Dr. Fei Jun and our museum deep-dives in the history of AI, and present artworks that have undergone hybrid collaboration between artists and AI, engaging algorithms, 3D modeling and other AI solutions.
Let's get into this exhibition through the curator Fei Jun and Co-curator Wang Kaimei's preface.
Peeping through Rear Window
Finding truth in Real Wonder
Rear Window
In Alfred Hitchcock's classic 1954 thriller Rear Window, trapped in a wheelchair the hero passes time by watching his neighbors. One day, through the rear window opening towards the garden he thinks he witnesses a murder. Hitchcock's mastery of cinematic language turns us all into voyeurs. Between what we see and what we think we see, the film bridges a path for truth-seeking, both within and beyond the screen. Today, Artificial Intelligence is complicating the notion of seeing and being seen. In a way, AI is not only a seeing agent, but also storyteller and constructor which shapes and forms what we see. AI's endless collages of fragmented data reshapes the way we understand the world.

Human minds develop through communication and stagnate in isolation. In the past, the Iron Curtain divided the world into a confrontation between East and West blocs. Today, Silicon Curtains made of code pass through billions of smartphones, computers and servers worldwide, forming information cocoons based on algorithms that control human attention and data flows. As private space disappearance, voyeurs become exhibitionists, leaving behind non-erasable digital footprints in cyberspace. Eventually, the algorithms behind our everyday screen-gazing will construct our desires into new charts. The term Real Wonder in this exhibition tackle with AI in hybrid art forms reshaping our cultural history and future narrative.

Real Wonder
If the metaphorical Rear Window here provides a crack for peeping into the truth, then the Real Wonder tells about new fables for truth-seeking.

What we refer to here as fables are not fabricated storytelling, but another kind of technology-driven world order; a metaphor for the future. AI has not only expanded our perception through simulation of life forms and revisiting our history, it also demands new answers to fundamental questions, such as how do we define human, how we tell truth… What's more, how do we distinguish a human agent from a computer bot behind the omnipresent data-collecting, or know if we see real wonder created by an artist or just a spectacle made by AI.

The fables here are not the revelations of ancient prophets, but the technical reminders of how to adjust our relationship with AI. As society entrusts more to algorithms and datas, we need fables to reboot the system. The notion of Fable in this exhibition opens new windows for humanity, and explores new ways of seeing. Towards a future shaped by AI, where are we going to land?
