Woven photo paper with sewing threads

Inkjet printing on etched art paper

Inkjet printed paper-cutting
Corinne Beaumier

How far can we see within? presents the works of three artists born in China, adopted into Quebec, Canada, and shaped by cross-cultural migration: Corinne Beaumier, Tong Zhou Lafrance, and An Laurence. Navigating fissures of cultural identity, they confront estrangement and re-examine their native homeland through artistic practices that dialogue with fragmented memories, seeking to reconstruct complex maps of self-perception. Under the dual forces of globalization and digitization, personal experience transcends the purely psychological, becoming a site perpetually reshaped by visual texts and cultural mechanisms. At the intersection of cross-cultural displacement, technological imagery, and visual representation, how do these artists pursue the authenticity of inner experience? The exhibition thus poses a fundamental question: How far can we see within?
Tong Zhou Lafrance’s Untitled Labour consists of several diptychs that reflect on pivotal moments in her life, including her transnational adoption in 1999, her childhood in Quebec City, and her return to China in 2012. Using archival photographs taken by her mother, she intervenes in the surface of these images with hand-stitched threads, weaving together fragments of a life shaped by geographic and cultural separation. The work reflects on the complex entanglements between Chinese manual labor, transnational adoption systems, and the reconstruction of identity. The title Untitled Labour not only to the often overlooked manual labor involved in artistic creation, but also to the invisible and unnamed lives embedded within the adoption industry.Corinne Beaumier’s Le fond et la form employs restrained formal language to expose the inner workings of "cultural viewing." Through an archaeological gaze, she reassembles family photos, archival footage, and museum display images into "secondary landscapes." Her focus lies not in image content but in modes of seeing. Via structural reconstruction and precise image deployment, she dismantles the visual hierarchy between "background" and "subject," challenging entrenched power dimensions in Western exhibition systems and interrogating hegemonic structures of cultural cognition.
These three bodies of work—engaging textiles, digital images, and archival structures—collectively chart an introspective path exploring "seeing and being seen," "memory and re-inscription." They propose that identity is no longer a fixed label but a mutable emotional circuit; memory, not a static image to be retrieved, becomes a dynamic process continually reshaped by technological languages, cultural codes, and psychological projections.
"How far can we see within?" transcends self-inquiry to offer incisive critique of contemporary perceptual experience. In an era of image saturation, memory drift, and identity fragmentation, art resists reductive narratives, becoming a vessel for cognitive complexity that compels reflection on the multidimensional tensions between identity, memory, and culture.
We are grateful to the Consulate of Canada and Bureaux du Québec, the Canada Arts Council, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and the galleries / spaces welcoming the exhibition, for their support and trust.

Inspired by Corinne Beaumier’s poetic series Le fond et la forme, this workshop invites participants to explore personal archives through the delicate art of photo papercutting. Participants are encouraged to bring photographs that speak to their personal histories, images tied to family, heritage, and experiences of grief or remembrance.
Using simple yet transformative paper cutting techniques, we will engage with these photographs as material and metaphor. Drawing from Beaumier’s approach, we will carve into the surface of memory, allowing shapes and voids to open space for reflection and conversation. What do we choose to reveal? What do we remove? What do the empty spaces begin to hold?
Each participant will leave with a completed artwork, an altered photograph that becomes both an artifact and a gesture. This workshop offers an opportunity to sit with absence, connection, and the layered stories our images carry, an invitation to look beyond the holes.
Participants should send the picture they wish to cut to Schein space before June 4.
