Exhibition View

Hua International is honored to present e-nnui, an exhibition by New York-based art collective CFGNY and Chinese artist Tao Hui.

The exhibition title e-nnui is derived from a modified spelling of the word “ennui,” evoking a sense of weariness and emotional fatigue. The Chinese title “倦” (juàn, or “weariness”) conveys a similar feeling of exhaustion, while also alluding phonetically to the term “内卷” (nèijuǎn, or “involution”), referencing the social phenomenon of excessive internal competition. In our contemporary context, fatigue is no longer merely a personal sentiment, but a form of collective perception. The “e-” prefix suggests our current reality, one shaped by digitalization, network aesthetics, and the desires of mediated labor, which forms the shared backdrop for the practices and recent works of both CFGNY and Tao Hui.

Starting from the concept of “e-labour,” the exhibition examines the new modes of labor and consumption that permeate our daily lives: the continuous generation of images, the rapid replication of popular aesthetics, the dilution and redistribution of attention. Together, these dynamics contribute to a structural fatigue embedded in our online existence. Approaching the theme of “electronic exhaustion” from different trajectories, the artists offer a cross-sectional observation of this phenomenon. "e-nnui" becomes both material and clue, a slow visual excavation that reveals a subtle intertextuality between production and aesthetics.

The artist Tao Hui draws from sand tables, objects, and small models of Aranya left over from the resort's planning phase. These align with Tao’s long-term interest in individual destiny and urban changes. Each holographic projection is a high-precision construction process: using a laser as the imaging light source, a to-scale building model materializes through complex imaging technology, all within an extremely quiet environment.

Through these conceptual and technical means, Tao Hui creates an archival record of the real world while highlighting how digital technologies continue to shape the act of seeing today.

In contemporary life, emerging consumer trends have given rise to professions such as internet influencers and livestream sales hosts. In stark contrast to the polished, glamorous image they present on screen, this work reveals the little-known and often harsh reality behind their labor. The video is projected onto a custom-made screen that appears limp and collapsed, giving tangible form to the idea of relentless toil.

The livestream scene in the video is strikingly realistic yet so rudimentary that it borders on the absurd. The host jokes self-deprecatingly while promoting products in front of the camera, exposing a deep desire for connection that also reflects the ever-growing yet insatiable human appetite for consumption.

Focusing on a digital lifestyle centered on social media and smartphone screens, the work invites viewers to consider the subtle and complex dependencies between screen and reality, livelihood and labor, self and image in an increasingly disconnected age.

CFGNY
Transliteration(Detail View), 2022

Glazed porcelain

The work Transcliteration by the artist collective CFGNY is grounded in their history of working with ceramics. Initially, they began exploring ceramics out of an interest in the historical production and export methods of Jingdezhen porcelain. In 2020, CFGNY had planned to travel to Jingdezhen as a group to observe how numerous small businesses collaborate to produce a single piece, including merchants selling clay, craftsmen specializing in glazes, mold makers, and kiln operators. This collective production process, and the way porcelain later became an export product that symbolized “Chineseness” for audiences outside of China, is what drew them to this medium. For nearly a thousand years, Jingdezhen porcelain has been an important cultural material shaping how people understand China and the idea of “Chineseness.”

CFGNY’s sculptural process involves collecting ready-made materials that are often sourced from Chinese dollar stores. These items have now become typical objects that people, especially in the United States, associate with “Chineseness” as cheap and easily accessible imports. They carefully arrange these objects together to create cavities between them, then pour plaster into these negative spaces to form positive molds that bear the partial impressions of many different objects. This new form preserves the fragmented traces of the items that gave it shape. From these plaster molds, they create slip-cast porcelain works.

Glazed porcelain

CFGNY commissioned these works to be produced in Jingdezhen, as the city is the point of origin for many goods that, through the history of porcelain exports, have shaped the world’s imagination of Chinese culture. To realize this project, CFGNY scanned the initial plaster model and enlarged it through 3D printing. Because of the increased scale, the final mold for the model had to be divided into three parts. In working with the material, they decided to treat these three parts as modular components that could be recombined in multiple ways. The three separate plaster molds are copied, distorted, and rotated in each iteration, allowing the sculptures to move further toward abstraction. In the end, these sculptures appear to share a single origin point, the first plaster cast they created. However, this origin actually disappears before the casting even begins, as each anonymous ready-made object used to create the cast is itself a starting point. The work explores Jingdezhen as a historical source through which China has been imagined via material (porcelain) and examines how perceptions of a people and a place have been distorted and reproduced over centuries of trade and other forms of exchange.

Founded in 2016 as an ongoing dialogue on the intersection of art, fashion, and identity, artist collective CFGNY continually returns to the term "vaguely Asian": an understanding of racial identity as a specific cultural experience combined with the experience of being perceived as other. In addition to using fashion as a readymade, CFGNY’s practice spans mediums such as video, performance, architectural installation, and sculpture, researching the ways in which material assemblage and reproduction play a part in the formation and racialization of such “vaguely Asian” identities. CFGNY does not wish to represent what it means to be “Asian” in the singular; instead, it encourages the visualization of the countless ways one is able to be in the plural. CFGNY is composed of Daniel Chew, Ten Izu, Kirsten Kilponen, and Tin Nguyen.
